When is a gadget not a gadget?

I recently bought a piano. I considered a number of safe options, like Yamah but ended up with an off-the-wall instrument

Is it a gadget? You don't plug it in (but some pianos do connect to mains electricity) but this thing has a carbon fibre sound board, composite materials in the action and a patented methos for transferring sound energy to the soundboard which given about double the usual efficiency.

This instrument is undoubtedly at the cutting edge, as far as pianos are concerned. But is it a gadget?

Good question!

Since its a piano, I believe the division comes between it being an instrument, but also a device with a computer inside it. Gadgets serve a definite purpose, they are usually at the cutting edge as you mentioned. Since a piano is not a relatively new invention, the piano itself should not be considered a gadget, but a musical instrument. But, for example, I have a MIDI Keyboard that connects to my computer via USB. I would consider it a gadget. There is software that goes into it, much computer programming is involved in creating it since the "strings and mallets" are all just synthetic information transferred via the computer's language of "bits." These bits go through the proper channels (depending on how you connect this keyboard you have and how you get the sound out) and the bits are converted eventually to sound waves in the speakers so that our ear understands them, then the inner cortex does some incredible things involving vibration and pressure which converts the sound waves into a "code" (like computer bits) that our brain can interpret. There's a whole lots of complex technology that goes into soundboards, and as cutting edge as your piano sounds, I would probably consider it to be a type of gadget. That's my opinion, so please consider further investigation:

Take a look at this article, it may give you a better idea of how to classify your piano.

What an interesting thought! I hope I could be of help Nezza.

Does it have buttons? Is there a newer better version coming out? Is the value going to be rapidly decreasing over the next 2-5 years? Does it have a computer chip?

If the answer isn't yes to ALL these questions and maybe a few more, it's not a gadget. For example. A Timex/Citizen/Rolex watch is not a gadget. A ipod nano to be used as a watch is a gadget in the same way that the new MotoActv is a gadget. A fitbit is a gadget, but a bathroom scale is not. A clock is not a gadget, but an alarm clock is a gadget. Make sense?

I think any time you use tech (such as your carbon fiber) to improve on a product, then it can be considered a gadget......or at least more gadgety.
