Then I installed the beta of ios 4,2 a few weeks ago which changes the function of the switch to a mute switch - there is no longer any orientation lock. This apparently is a going to stay this way in the final 4.2 release. The result, using the iPad in anything other than a seating position is next to impossible. Try reading it lying on you side or whilst on you back in bed and the orientation will flick between landscape and portrait, end up in the wrong orientation.
I don't know what Apple are thinking of - surely they tested the iPad before release and saw the need of the lock - why remove it now? The lack of a mute switch was a minor inconvenience at worst - and you could quickly turn the volume down as an alternative. The lack of an orientation lock reduces functionality, and the only alternative is to sit upright.
Discussion about
When I first got my iPad, I questioned the lack of a mute switch, but the need for the orientation lock switch seemed obvious.
I don't own an iPad so I can't confirm this. However, according to the iOS 4.2 documentation, if you tap the home button twice to access the multitasking menu and swipe from left to right on it to access the iPod controls, there should be an orientation lock button there.
Yeah, I'm really missing the orientation lock myself. Like You and Peter mentioned, it's easy enough to mute the iPad by holding the volume switch.
At least we know that it can be changed via a software configuration. I imagine we'll see a jailbreak solution to this in the future (which is pretty lame).

Thanks Apple for generating hours worth of support calls from coworkers and family! I was bored anyway and needed something to do with all this free time!
