What was your first MP3 or portable media player?
My first was a Rio 500 back in 2000 with a whopping 64MB of storage space, expandable to 96MB. I had to use Rio's terrible software and often had to transcode files down to 92Kbps.
From there I went in the following order:
Apple iPod 4th Gen
iRiver H10
Sandisk SDMX1
Sandisk Sansa e230

My first "mp3 player" was the Sharp Zaurus with a 4GB CF card. That obviously wasn't ideal so I later got the iPod mini. I used that until the 1st iPhone and have used whatever my current phone has been ever since. I generally don't like the idea of "do-it-all" devices, but having audio players in phones is the best thing that has happened to mobile phones since the battery.
I actually had the 5500-SL, several years after its initial release since I could not afford one when they were on the shelves in Office Depot. It was an amazing device for its time. I could still get by with that and a dumb phone if I had to. I have been waiting for Sharp to bring out a killer android device here in the states but they seem to be losing steam.
iPod 4th Gen 15 GB
iPod Nano 4th Gen 4 GB
iPod Shuffle 2nd Gen 2 GB
iPod Touch 1st Gen 16 GB
iPod Touch 2nd Gen 16 GB
After that, I started to use smart phones, which pretty much replaced my use of PMPs:
HTC Hero (Sprint)
Samsung Galaxy S Epic 4G (Sprint)
My daughter inherited the iPod Nano, we still use the shuffles for working out, and the 2nd Gen iPod Touch sits on a speaker dock in the kitchen streaming music and podcasts. The rest have been sent to Gazelle.

When it comes to working out, though, nothing beats the shuffle. I use the arriva headset and it works out great:

Mine was the Creative Nomad, with a massive 6gb hard drive I thought I'd never find that much music ever, I soon learned I could and I did, but at the time, like 2000, that was absurdly huge, I think I paid like 400 dollars for it.
After that thou in order it went:
Creative Nomad Zen Xtra
Creative Zen Touch
Creative Zen Micro
Creative Zen MicroPhoto
Apple iPod Classic
Microsoft Zune 30
And Now I just use my phones.

iPod 2nd-generation. I still kind of miss that thing: gdgt.com/apple/ipod/2nd-gen/
But I was looking for MP3 players before that (back in those days, I was still using Windows). The Creative Nomads looked interesting, but there was just something about this new Apple device that really struck a chord with me.
Saved up a bunch of money and spent $500 on the 20GB model. It was probably the first big tech purchase as a young adult.

When I heard Apple was planning to release the iPod for Windows based devices I got really excited. I wanted one so badly we used freeipod.com and started a little ring of sign ups among friends
