What useful purpose does this have?

I understand the laziness factor that somehow draws people to buy this $210 machine for facebook and whatnot but i mean besides that what advantages does this even have? What do they mean by sharing a connection i mean i can open my router to anybody as well in fact its like that by default so why should anyone hand over a couple hundred for this thing?

if i'm not mistaken, this thing makes you money for sharing your connection so if you live close to a wiif-less coffee shop you could be in for a big one!

sounds cool but they only give 50% of the profits which sucks if you are paying the internet bills. They should be a hardware company mostly and take 10% at most IMHO.

It lets you use the shared hotspots of all the other FON users. There are quite a lot here in the UK. Bandwidth and functionality of the guest hotspot is limited, so you aren't letting guests onto your network proper or letting wreck your browsing/gaming experience.

Here's some more info as well:
www.fon.com/en/support/faqs#aboutFON

They've got a great wiki with tons of information on there.

Now you know how useful this might be?!

It's just too expensive compare to the latest linksys 802.11n routers, which has a potential of becoming similar product via open-wrt project.(please....)

This new FON product is indeed useful, but the price is out of control. Since most everyone already has a wireless router, one can add these features and many more with a $65 (at Amazon) D-link GSM-D600.

The GSM-D600 has 2 USB ports and a drive bay for a 3.5" HDD (max size I believe is 500GB). One can change firmware and/or software where there are 3 different options depending on technical knowledge including running Debian. All the details can be found on the wiki here: dsmg600[dot]info

I can't recommend this option enough, but anyone interested better like Linux. I use one USB port with a 4GB thumb-drive where the OS is mounted and the other with a 4-port USB hub (Printer+2 other USB storage drives+one free port).

Please keep in mind this device runs a Freescale proc clocked at 170MHz.
