What is the best Android phone right now? Why?

I know this is a highly subjective question but I want to know what people think the most important features are when comparing Android phones.

I'm guessing phones with the Tegra 2 or other dual core variations will appeal to power users while display enthusiasts will either go for a SAMOLED+ or qHD LCD. I believe hardcore Android nerds will say that the latest Nexus is the best because of its stock UI. Do you look for a durable aluminum enclosure? Or perhaps it's the camera that is a deciding factor?

For me it's the Nexus S. It's solidly built (though unfortunately plastic), has stock Android and will be first in line for updates. It also has a great camera on the back, plus the considerably less awesome front facing camera should you need to video chat. It isn't the fastest phone on the market right now but the battery lasts all day and you never have to worry about crappy bloatware on the device. The little extras like the great display and NFC chip push it over the edge for me. But again, I REALLY wish it had the build quality/materials of my Nexus One.

Based on Google's judgement so far, I feel pretty confident in saying that the latest in the Nexus series will continue to be the best Android phones available. I will probably also continue to drop some cash alternating between upgrades and unlocked devices (so that I can have the latest each year).

Samsung Galaxy SII
The awesome SAMOLED+ display makes up for its lack of qHD screen. Super thin as well; along with the unlocked bootloader!

"It's the best Android smartphone yet, but more importantly, it might well be the best smartphone, period."
"Nonetheless, if you're asking us what smartphone to buy today, unconstrained by such externalities, the Galaxy S II would be the clear choice."

My ideals, in order of preference:

- pure Android
- LTE
- dual-core
- great screen

Sadly, I know my biggest ideal is the least common/likely. There were rumors a couple weeks ago about a Nexus phone at the end of the year, but I don't know about that.

The next best thing I can see at the moment is, unfortunately, the Galaxy S II. But for me, that's conditional on whether I can put CM7 on it. I simply won't live with the awful Touchwiz interface...

Google did confirm that a new Nexus "device" was in development for release later this year, at Google's I/O conference

The one without the skins and bloatware.

The best Android phone RIGHT NOW, has got to be the Nexus S. I'm no fan of Samsung's and their plastic, but the Nexus devices get the updates first, are very well supported both by Google and by the community, and are the top spec of their generation.

For me, the most important thing is build quality, and HTC's aluminium unibodies are brilliant at that. But then again, LG's build on the Optimus 2X isn't bad, neither is the Galaxy SII nor the Motorola Atrix.

And while the camera is important, I'm not going on any photoshoots with it. For me, 5MP+ is good enough for casual shots, my actual camera can handle the rest.

To conclude, a Nexus device. The Nexus One is still great, going strong and fast, and the Nexus S, despite having a single core architecture CPU, is still the fastest of the lot.

Honestly I love the Sense UI so I would say an HTC phone...but I think HTC has kind of fallen behind other manufacturers. So I'm gonna say the best is the Samsung Galaxy S II, even though Touch wiz looks childish to me. It's sleek, thin, fast and has a fantastic screen.
