What is a good headset for the 360 that balances quality and cost?

I'm getting pretty tired of the stock 360 headset. I'd like something to replace it so I can actually hear what everyone is saying in MW2, but I'm not keen on dropping that much cash on it (why MS didn't just give the 360 a standard Bluetooth headset profile is beyond me). I'd say my limit maxes out around $80. Any thoughts?

Are you looking for headphones + mic? Or just a headset for voice communication?

The official wireless xbox 360 headset is amazing. Super loud, sounds great. I've had mine for 2 years and wouldn't use anything else.

Was just thinking I needed to clarify that. I'm looking for voice communication only. I've got a good enough speaker set up for in-game sound.

So the official MS wireless has good volume and mic pickup? My biggest gripe with the wired headset is that it is staticy and there seems to be a lag on both ends (i.e., it starts to pick up audio in mid-sentence).

And how does it hold a charge for you? A lot of folks seem to complain about the battery life and how quickly it starts to deteriorate.

I've had mine since Crackdown came out (funny story where circuit city double billed my card, and my complaining got me a gift card). So it's been a while, and i'm quite hard of hearing. I do keep mine at max volume, but I can hear everything wonderfully. And for picking up sound, there used to be an issue where every now and again it would push static out to everyone and they'd yell at me .. i'd turn it off and on and it would be fine.... BUT, they quickly put out an update and the issue went away. Never had any complaints otherwise, or people needing me to repeat anything due to the mic.

As for holding a charge, I do plug it in after any long gaming session. But I can play modern warfare 2 for a good 5-6 hours straight and it usually won't beep at me in that time. Try doing that twice without charging though and it'll run out for sure. But no complaints on battery whatsoever.

I would buy again.

I also have the wireless mic and would say It works great. I have had a few connection issues where it drops the connection for about 3-5 seconds but then it is back connected again. It is much louder than the wired version and the mic is much more sensitive. So much so that if my mic volume is on max people always complain about hearing an echo. As far as ease of understanding what people are saying I would say the wireless ms mic drops off a lot of the lower frequency sounds or bass in peoples voices. The result is the sound you hear is much less full yet also easier to understand speech. I would agree with polymira that battery life isnt too much of an issue, but there have been more than a few times i forget to plug it in when i finish and end up on my wired mic before not to long. It comes with a usb charger and works in the xbox even when it is off.

So yea if something happened to mine I would probably buy a new one.

Has anybody tried the mic Mad Catz made for MW2?

I use a plantronics MX500C. Honestly though, even a cheap 2.5mm in-line microphones made for old cell phones give me ample volume (they just don't have mute switches).

Have you tried another controller? One of my controller has issues with thinking there is a mic plugged in even when theres not.

Also, its possible that your controller is getting interference from some other wireless device which translates into static (or popping sounds) through the headset. For my brother is was his Panasonic wireless 5.1 sound system. The rear speakers are wireless and operate at the same 2.4 frequency. As soon as he turns them off the static and popping is gone.

It's possible. My house is a veritable switching station of wireless tech. But I'm not sure how much should be interfering with the 360's controller. I rarely have anything (overtly) wireless running while I'm playing save for my wi-fi network...

I use the Ear Force X31 made by Turtle Beach. It is a great headset, over the ear headphones and a great mic. They support surround sound as well. They also have a lower model, and a wireless higher end model. www.turtlebeach.com/products/efx3/home.aspx

My Turtle Beach headphones had the microphone go out. I still wanted to use the headphones, as they work great.

I think I can offer you a great solution.

The Modern Warfare 2 Throat Communicator. It's a really great sounding voice communicator, plugs straight into the controller, and sits around your neck. It's comfortable, sounds great, and still lets you use surrounds sound speakers or headphones.

Best part: its like 20-30 bucks and is available at like Gamestop, Best Buy, pretty much anywhere.

Good luck!

So have you actually used the throat communicator? I've read good and bad (as is the case with pretty much every other headset out there!) and haven't seen a true consensus.

I still use it for at least 3 hours a day, all my friends say that they can still hear me perfectly. It solved the problem of my Ear Force microphone crapping out.

I also rock the Turtle Beach. Went a little overboard with the Ear Force X41 (I was drinking at the time of ordering) but love the set. I was originally going to go the introductory route... Ear Force XLC for $30!

Turtle Beach has been around for years with quality products so they are a safe bet.

Good luck and happy fraggin'!

i had the mw2 throat mic.... it died within a month. i loved it when it worked but not very durable. ill tell you what i would do with $80 bucks. buy that volume/mute puck (i believe nyko makes it) for $8 and get a decent plantronics boom mic for a cell phone. i have gone through just about every xbox 360 mic worth mentioning here (also had microsoft's wireless, had sync problems due to my controllers being first gen or so i'm told).

i now use the astro a40, but those are overkill for what you want and your budget.

look into the puck/mic combo. the great thing is you don't sacrifice quality and if one breaks it's not a big deal to replace.

Okay, so I'm thinking I'm going to pick up the MS Wireless Headset tonight and give it a whirl. While I like the idea of the Throat Communicator, the more I read about it, the more I'm convinced that my 18.5" neck size and full beard will make it uncomfortable for long sessions. So I'll keep it in mind for a fallback at this point.

As an aside, I tried using a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter with a single cord headset I had lying around and it did not work. So I guess as far as adapters go, it needs to be one designed to work with the 360. Or at least it's more of a crap shoot.

Thanks for all the input. It's nice to have opinions from known tech geeks rather than the random Amazon/Gamestop shoppers!

I have a wired one I bough cheap from dealextreme.com . No problems with it, ever. It was worth the cheap price.
