What do you do when your machine runs hot?

I used to have a 17" MacBook Pro and most of my friends are also designers and they have fallen into the Apple trap. The number one complaint I hear about MacBook Pros of any size: heat. They always run very hot. So, since Apple refuses to deal with the issue through design, what do you do to keep your computer (and yourself) cool?

Elevate the machine, keep the lid open, and most importantly with the unibodies in particular, waft cool air OVER the keyboard.

Either that or of course, toss the trinket. There's actually no particular reason really why you can't design (better) on a non-Mac, except maybe that the software can be harder to pirate especially if all your mates are on Macs.

I don't actually use a Mac any more. I use a much more powerful, if albeit uglier, HP Elitebook. I love the thing.

I was just wondering what other people did to keep their Macs cool. I had never heard of people attempting to get cool air over the keyboard but I guess it makes a lot of sense because a lot of heat ends up there.

No, it makes sense because the keyboard is actually an air intake on the Unibodies.

Good grief, he was asking an objective question, not asking you to critique his workflow.

I did.

The workflow critique is a bonus answer.

The first part of what he said.

I had a Vaio with a dead fan (died just after the warranty expired) and I kept using it without issue for another 4 years just by doing all that.

I try to identify the air vent locations and keep them unblocked as much as possible.

got a Zalman cooler for my HP, which always runs hot. dual fan in the cooler, runs on USB. works great. I've replaced the paste on the cpu twice now and it still runs hot.

Well, I have a Dell Latitude D630 (work-issued) that runs several times a day at 80+ celsius. The thing only has one fan, it was designed very poorly if you ask me. The only thing I can do is be patient with it and complain continually to the helpdesk that I need a new machine. I've elevated it, taken it off the dock...nothing helps.

I have a (custom built) PC, which, even when overclocked, doesn't seem to ever get hot at all, so I can't say I've had a problem with it.
