They weren't kidding about targeting more hardcore gamers, and I have to admit that I'm taking a second look at the system after that lineup (especially Pikmin). What about you?
I feel like what hurt Wii U most is every presenter, especially Reggie Fils-Aime, sounding more monotonous than Ben Stein. Like @jonursenbach said, things started out so well with an impressive Pikmin 3 presentation, and just fizzled after that. A press conference is supposed to get you psyched for upcoming releases, and Sony's, EA's and Ubisoft's did just that. Nintendo's is the only press conference that left me *less* excited about the Wii U than I was before.
As an early adopter and owner of most of the NEWSHINY, what interests me is seeing titles that will sell a console (h/t @TgD). Seeing old IP get a fresh coat of paint just annoys me: Great, you've played Arkham City already? Cool, now spend more money to play it again because we've added some console-specific stuff to it. Blah. Why not take that same innovation and add it to a completely different, Wii U-specific adventure in the Batman: Arkham * franchise? Regurgitating existing content just tells me that publishers aren't yet willing to invest real resources in the new console.
Maybe I am not a hardcore gamer (anymore) but the only titles that excite me are the New Super Mario Bros and Pikmin 3.
The question is whether any of these games will be good enough on their own to sell the system. Back in late 2001, Halo sold Xboxes.
I am guilty of owning all of the recent consoles due to fantastic console-specific titles, but I am a bit wary moving into this next generation. I don't think the Wii U's launch lineup will make the console a preorder or launch day buy for me. I may have to test the waters if I am going to commit.
The briefing started out so damn strong with Pikmin 3 but then quickly faded into obscurity. I was really excited for the Wii U too, but after all this I'm just kind of lukewarm on it.
I'll probably still trade my Wii in for a Wii U so I can have the option to play some of these games, but I'm not nearly as excited about it as I was yesterday.
Pikmin sounds fun but I have to admit that I'm kind of excited about Just Dance 4. I'm not sure if that's enough to make me want to buy a new console though. And where's Zelda?
