Ryan, would you agree that the biggest problem Palm has the the moment (in relation to the fall out of the past 48 hours with slow sales etc) is the fact they have 2 (ok 4 with some the +'s included) devices out on the market? Androids been a massive hit because device numbers are way up there, Palm needs to launch other devices for other markets and quick. (This comes from a massive Palm fan with an O2 UK Pre)

The multiple carrier and cell standard roll out of 1.4 definitely makes me believe that the holdouts are carrier related. Despite the more limited coverage this one again makes me very appreciative of being on Sprint rather then Verizon. My wife's Droid Eris MIGHT be at Android 2.1 by 2011 the way their fractured OS updates seem to be going.

Update: looks like it's out! That wasn't so bad, but I wouldn't have been shocked if it was days or a week (or more).

I have a feeling Verizon was being really meh with letting Palm push the update out. The "rumor" was that Sprint had it apporved back on the 15th. I'm sure Palm was trying to do a full roll out to everything to avoid the Android effect on the OS. Then with probably trying to mostly keep their promise of February just decided they were going to have to at least push Sprints and hope Verizon jumps on board quickly. For as much excitement as Big Red said they had for the Pre, they have been doing a pretty lousy job on helping it in any way. (their commercials do not count) I should take a video of me posting this and pop it up on twitter.

These OTA updates are great, but Ryan is so right - there should be a way to download them another way, especially when carriers do not the job they were asked for. The Android problem is far more complex, with the labels "with Google" and stuff...

I can't wait the Pré Plus to be available here in France so I can ditch my "non-upgraded-by-Samsung" Android 1.5 (!) Galaxy to support Palm, who needs customers more than ever...

I am in agreement that Palm needs new hardware. Unfortunately the Pre has just not had the halo effect and draw of one model that something like the iPhone has had. So Palm definitely needs to push out a phone with some truly high end and hopefully somewhat exclusive hardware (like a dual core snapdragon?) and premium build materials. A larger screen would be nice with a form factor more similar to the Droid's. I would love to have an all touchscreen phone with no hardware keyboard - but we know Palm is committed to hardware keyboards. With all that said I love the form factor of both the Pre and the Pixi and think they should continue to develop those phones similarly to how Apple has kept the iPhone consistent design language wise. BTW I am loving webOS 1.4 so far. It seems to have all sorts of polished attention to detail niceties baked in (plus the obvious very cool video recording/editing).

We began pushing the OTA update out to Pre Plus and Pixi Plus devices as of midnight EST today. Users should be able to manually poll and initiate the upgrade later today; the device auto-checks for updates once every seven days so most will be updated within a week.

I seriously can't wait until webos hits AT&T. I've been waiting to own one of these devices since their first announcement of the new os. I don't care if people think the iPhone or Android devices are way better, and that Palm will die. If they do die, they'll die with at least one more customer.

I wish Palm released an unlocked version. I was very hyped about the Pre. Too bad they released on Sprint at a terribly high price point.

Unlock it, let it loose on the world, and see what the geeks do with it.
