At least if Apple's previous development cycles for their iOS releases are anything to go by (~every 2 weeks until ship date). I'd say look for it to drop on Wednesday!
Have you been using iOS 4.2 on your iPad yet? What have you thought after using it for the past week?
Discussion about
We should see an updated iOS 4.2 beta for the iPad this week.
It is leaps and bounds ahead of 3.x but I am still not completely satisfied with it. The form of multitasking works decently, though not many iPad apps have implemented it yet. Threaded emails are greatly appreciated. I don't quite understand their choice in making the orientation lock a mute switch, but accessing the orientation lock is still quite easy.
The thing that does bother me a little bit is that there are no enhancements to the UI to take more advantage of the increased screen real estate. I know that developers have done a great deal making apps that do just that, I just feel that Apple should do more with it themselves. I understand they are going for UI consistency across devices, and that is great, but lets face it, the iPad is not the iPhone/iPod touch. It has a different form factor and higher resolution screen and the OS should be designed with that in mind. Maybe a dashboard like interface when pinching on the home screen for some glanceable information (yes I know there is an app for this when jailbreaking). The ability to at least preview one app while working in another, something I do all the time on a computer while writing.
Although it is certainly a step in the right direction there are many improvements they have yet to make. Their current implementation of multitasking makes a few too many compromises. Their rigid cross device UI consistency makes the change in form factor seem incidental from an OS perspective. Not to mention the still awful notification system that I can hardly believe Apple hasn't fixed yet. I have had a couple of glitches pop up here and there with this build but I am sure they will be ironed out prior to release. So my thoughts: it is much better, but still lacking as a true tablet centric OS. I am sure we will see minor adjustments to address many of these issues as Apple develops the OS into maturity. It will just be done on Apple's time, which can be quite slow at one point, and then jump lightyears ahead the next. I look forward to seeing any new features they may be rolling out prior to full release.
