Was using this as wireless access point, router and time machine until the other day, when the wireless speed dropped off to virtually zero (after about three…

years of pretty steady performance), and no amount of tinkering could get it working at normal speed again. Had to replace the WAP with a Netgear WNR2000 which works very well. Will still use Time Capsule for Mac backups.

I've always felt the Airports are a bit flaky and often die within a few years. Myself and a number of friends have gone through a bunch of Airport Extremes and Expresses. I haven't thrown down for a Time Capsule, since I don't trust it to stay alive with my data!

As much as I want to like the Airport, I must agree. It's not that they don't work, but they tend to act up once in a while. Haven't had one die on me though, not without direct intervention of lightning anyhow ;)

Tried to use Time Machine with a external drive with my Airport Extreme, but it kept unmounting the drive and not being able to reconnect for 24 hours. And it was not a problem with the drive.
