Want to waste $7 dollars? Buy an HDMI cable for your Droid X.

I just picked up an HDMI cable (along with a car mount and dock) for my Droid X and it's sad how limited the HDMI out is on the phone. You're confined to only viewing content within the Gallery app which includes photos and videos. Doesn't sound too bad, but the Gallery app acts super buggy when you have the phone connected to your TV. It's slower, freezes randomly, and it's not very intuitive navigating your content. To top it off, your photos aren't even full screen! Images are plastered right in the center of your display surrounded by black nothingness ( yfrog.com/gy36wtwj ). It might be due to the output being limited to 720p.

On the plus side, you can load up video content on your phone (ripped DVDs you have purchased of course) and play it on your TV. I've had mixed results with this -- the video quality is mostly bad and playback stutters with some of my video. I'm also never in a situation where I would ever play video off my phone since if I'm at home I can use my HTPC and if I'm at a friends place, they probably don't have this specific HDMI cable that's needed to connect.

If this video output capability was available with more applications, I could say that having HDMI out could be more useful. There's actually an app call RealHDMI that enables that, but it's costs you a few bucks: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.gmanapps...

Lesson learned: HDMI out on phones is stupid (for now).

I actually got the RealHDMI out app and its not terrible...but since the x can't display on both the phone and TV at the same time, it takes a bit to get used to. Still, overall, a bit of a waste. Only use I can think is maybe using it to pipe audio through when connected to the dock.
Thankfully I only paid about $3 for the cable off ebay :p
