It looks like a power tool, ready to slice big pieces of timber. Awesome.
It was actually designed mainly to play 3-inch CD singles, which fit inside perfectly. I guess everyone thought at the time that 3-inch CD singles (I think they could store about 18 minutes of music) were going to be big new format or something. It was a very cool toy, and it was amazing to be able to fit a CD player in my pocket.
That's really popular in japan too but I think it'd be a cool idea if they did that in DVD format making some kind of small 3" DVD music only and hopefully in Hi-fidelity audio... but that'd be too late of an idea now, we got so many audio formats that can be stored in flash based memory and others.
Made me laugh! Just saw Laserdisc movies at our local half-priced bookstore too!
When using 8cm CDs in the D-88, the disc fits entirely within the body of the device. There's a slider on the bottom of the unit that you move (which repositions the spindle from the centre to the edge) to accommodate 'normal' 12cm diameter discs, which protrude out of the unit.
8cm (3") CDs were the primary format for CD singles in Japan for many years, but they were pretty rare elsewhere. 3" DVDs do exist - they were used on some DVD camcorders, for example.

if this were just a compact cd burner or cd rom drive it would be awesome. and the ability to play 3cm cds would just be a quirk if that were true. it would definetley take less space width wise.

I have one, but it needs work - it won't stay on. Powers up, then shuts down. I think it just needs lubrication inside because for a while it would play partly through a disc.
I also have a huge collection of 3 inch cds. Mostly American issue ones, which are very rare because they only put them out in 1988 and they failed miserably. I have Beatles ones, etc.
Another fun dead format from that year was the CDV. I have a number of those too. (Not to be confused with the popular-in-asia VCD)
