Visualizing product prices: is it a good time to buy?

Ever want to get a better sense of whether now is a good time to buy that device you had your eye on? Well, in addition to sending you alerts to the best possible prices, gdgt now surfaces and visualizes product pricing trends on thousands of products!

As an example, check out one of our Must-have HDTVs: the Samsung UN55D8000 (gdgt.com/samsung/un55d8000/). From this graph we can quickly determine that after a big price hike a few weeks ago, it's since stabilized and is now at its lowest price in months. In fact, we can easily see that the UN55D8000 is actually down hundreds of dollars from its all time high. Now would be a great time to buy.

One of our core philosophies with gdgt is that data, curation, and design aren't enough on their own to help you figure out what products to purchase (and when to get them). But when we can take these three things and bring them together harmoniously, pretty amazing things can happen to your gadget buying experience.

We love this stuff, and nothing gets us more excited than figuring out how to make these kinds of experiences useful, usable, and beautiful. Let us know what you think!

Really good stuff indeed. For far too long I was idle on gdgt but I find what you're doing to be more and more enticing. Thanks for sharing this, Ryan!

What a nice feature. Did you consider putting the price axis reference on the right side, nearest the current price? It seems that would make it a little easier to understand the most recent history.

Good point, we'll take a look at that!

Unfortunately I can't see this working well in the UK :(

I hear you. We're actually working on layering in international pricing, starting with UK. Not sure how soon we'll get there, but it's in active development.

That's good to hear, cheers Ryan. I definitely like the feature but with tech, as with a lot of things I guess, there's often be a huge price difference from across the pond. Still, it does give me some idea as to the price trends.

How are you curating the vendors that provide the pricing? I see that in your example, the Amazon price which I tend to consider to be pretty competitive normally is about $600+ higher. When I looked to see what vendor had the low low price of $1599, I see it's Fassie.com which I'd never heard of.. They claim to have been around since 2004, but even Reseller Ratings has nothing on them. www.resellerratings.com/store/Fassie - Full disclaimer: I haven't really been in the market for a TV in a while, so it could explain my unfamiliarity with Fassie.
