Using Windows 7 in Boot Camp on MacBook Pro (2.53 GHz, 4GB of RAM) -- things are SLOW.
Alright, in my desperation to finally play Civilization V, I went ahead and installed Windows 7 in a Boot Camp partition on my MacBook Pro. This means, that for all intents and purposes, my laptop becomes a Windows machine when I reboot the computer and enter Windows 7.
So, my question is, with a computer that has a dual core 2.53GHz processor, 4 GB of RAM, and a 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT video card (maybe that's the problem?), why is my computer acting so damn slow? It takes a good 3 - 5 minutes to boot into Windows, and once I load up Civilization V, the fans inside the computer start spinning like crazy. It sounds like I'm on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier.
Interestingly enough, the desktop environment using Aero runs perfectly fine and is responsive. It's just booting up Windows or, God forbid, running a game that this computer tends to just suck. Is this computer just underpowered by today's standards?

This may be a stupid question, but are you sure that WIndows sees the dedicated graphics card, and that's the one it's using? A couple of times I have booted into Windows and found that it's only seeing the integrated card, resulting in severe speed problems.
I have Windows 7 ultimate on both my iMac and Mac Book Pro. I don't have any problems with games (including WoW and Starcraft 2 which I have played in Windows). My MBP is the 2.4 with the same 9600M GT. What's your environment like? My MBP stays pretty cool as long as its not being insulated on a blanket or something like that. It usually stays on a Griffin iStand or iLap whatever thats called.
As I mentioned below, the heat thing is a function of the Mac not being optimized for Windows 7 power management. I'd suggest getting a fan control application to keep the noise down.
As far as performance issues, other than heat I'm not sure why things would be slow at all. Overheating can cause some funky stuff to happen in Windows though.

Not sure what's up with the slow boot time. Seems unrelated to the video card though. My MBP that had lesser specs (but still 512MB vid card) could boot into Windows 7 in less than 1 minute. You should make sure that your NVIDIA drivers are up to date. Check NVIDIA's website for them because Apple writes absolutely horrid drivers for Windows. I literally cringe just thinking about it.
Oh, and you can't really do anything about the fans. Again, Apple does the worst job of any tech company in terms of writing drivers and keeping things cool. The processor runs hot in Boot Camp and the video card tends to run hotter than it needs to again. Not a Windows issue. Definitely an Apple issue. Haven't run into any of those problems on normal Windows machines.

Not sure I agree with this entirely. Worst job keeping things cool? Their products are giant heatsinks. My iMac fans never spin up, as it is one big aluminum heatsink. Quietest computer I've ever had (and I used to build PCs frequently). Apple historically tends to put more design into how their computers are laid out than that of PC manufacturers like Dell, Gateway, Sony which makes sense since they have far more product design capabilities than the aforementioned.
That being said, I do agree that the MBP's power management is not optimized for Windows so it does run hot, its a windows driver issue as you pointed out. Would be cool if Apple did something about those drivers! However, the fans can be controlled via fan control third party apps available.

Their products may be heatsinks but that doesn't mean they don't run hot. If you read most reviews of the MacBook Pros, both unibody and not, the reviewers tend to mention how hot they get.
Yes, you can control the fans, but I wouldn't want to be the one turning off the fans when the computer is already running hot in Windows. Apple just needs to get serious about its Windows drivers. I can see that they wouldn't want Windows to run flawlessly otherwise many more people would be tempted to run Windows more than OS X on a dual booting machine, not that it matters to them that much since they already made their money when they sold the machine.

I'm not sure if this will help but this is a video my friend made which should help solve any MBP overheating problems (it is by adjusting the fans)

this might be an annoying question, but did you install the driver CD after boot camp? it sounds like you're having graphics card issues.
BUT GOOD NEWS.. civ 5 is now out on the mac!!
