Discussion about
tx1000 issues
Has anyone had issues with the tx 1000? Specifically, wifi going out? After owning the laptop for about a year my wifi stopped working. After spending an incredibly frustrating 45 minutes on the phone with HP tech support I was told that a portion of my motherboard had burnt out and that it would cost ~$300 to fix.
It's a known issue... although HP won't own up to it. There is a major design flaw with the tx1000 & tx2000 series (they fixed it with the tx2500s) where heat builds up so much on the motherboard that the contacts come unsoldered. I've had my tx1000 on a fan-based cooling pad AND I've had the processor underclocked since the day it came out of the box, and it's still ticking 2 years on. I think the trick is keeping the temperature under 50 degrees celsius on a regular basis.

Yeah, I have this same problem. I sent it out to HP about 6 months ago and it just died again at the beginning of June. Then when I went to call HP, they said it was out of warranty and it would cost me $350 for the part and $100 for them to install it. What a rip off! Thank goodness I got a square trade warranty for it. They shipped me back my computer after the repair, but it kept overheating, so I sent it back. USPS damaged it before it got back to their repair center, so I'm hoping they will just reimburse me for the cost of the computer. This PC is just evil, because not only did the wifi die a couple times, but that heat problem is terrible and the touchscreen doesn't calibrate anymore. When I called HP, they said that it is a flaw with Vista and to just wait until 7 comes out so I can go spend more money on this...what a faulty product!
For all its benefits, the TX1000 sure has a lot of flaws. Mine overheats ridiculously (the inverter does a pretty good job of warming up too) and the chassis itself is notably flimsy. Added to that the lacklustre touchscreen and I'm sad to say it's been a slight regretful purchase. I'd love for them to make a Core2Duo based version with a nicer body and styling (the screen bezel must be about 5' on this thing). The newer models certainly fix a few issues but not enough to make me upgrade.
