Try it out, but don't expect much

I really wanted to like Jolicloud, but it needs a lot more work before prime time. Here are a few reasons why I can't use this full time on my netbook:

- "Applications" are not really applications. When I heard that this had an app directory, I thought it would have customized apps for the netbook form factor. Turns out when you "install" these apps, they just create links to webpages that open in their own window. I'd rather just open up a browser and just go to the website by itself.
- When you open the "applications", the scrolling is SLOOOW.
- The dashboard interface looks cool, but there's nothing too interesting in there. Just the app directory and some activity from people you follow, mostly consisting of "Chad started following Gretchen" or "Doris just installed gmail".
- It's essentially Ubuntu Netbook Remix with these add-ons that aren't compelling at all.

I really just want something optimized for the netbook screen, like Chrome OS. There's nothing about Jolicloud that blows me away. For now, I'm just going to go back to Windows 7, maybe Ubuntu Netbook Remix.

I do agree with your points but UNR slows my Aspire One 751h to a near halt. On the other hand Jolicloud gives my netbook a new begining, the OS is more refined arround each netbook giving it the leading edge with capatiblity that UNR does not aquire. I had searched for months trying to find a linux distro that worked with my system out of the box. The only so far is Jolicloud, Chrome OS is still unstable and does not support every function. Jolicloud is now my permanent OS.

The UNR was needed in the beginning to have a foundation to grow from. The new HTML5 menu system should be what you're looking for. Read more at www.jolionmini.com/2009/12/20/new-main-menu-html5/ This will be on the Full Beta release, which should be soon. Jolicloud has stated that they want to support as many netbooks as possible, before a launch of the full Beta. PineTrail netbooks are out and are being tested. Recently Jolicloud said that they'll have 99% netbook compatibility. Once this has been finalized, the release of HTML 5 main menu and faster response is up next. Within time, it will be the OS of choice on netbooks.

It's not really the dashboard speed/interface that is the problem, it's the concept itself. I don't see how this provides a better netbook experience than UNR, in it's current build. I see these Jolicloud applications as just glorified bookmarks.

I'll definitely check out the upcoming releases, hopefully it adds a bit more that will be significant enhancements.

I think they had to start somewhere. It'd be tough starting from scratch so they took UNR, tweaked it, saw there was an interest, and now are building more. A new kernel & menu should really help a ton. The support for GMA 500 & others like it are what separates them from any distribution - support for all. It's been slow news since their December release, but once they're satisfied they'll be back on everyone's radar - probably as an option from an OEM.

I was a much better OS when it was in alpha. It still retained a lot of its Ubuntu features and was much easier to install packages. If you can get a hold on that build give it a try.

I would have to go with you on that. I had almost the same experience with it, and the one thing that really annoyed me was that although it runs Ubuntu Netbook Remix they stripped a lot out like the ability to switch to full desktop which I love in the true Ubuntu Remix. It is perfect for someone who has never used Linux, and it implements flash well but other then that I am just not a fan
