Try Chrome OS (UPDATE: REMOVED)
EDIT: WE NO LONGER HOST A CHROME OS DOWNLOAD. SORRY!
After Google announced the availability of the Chrome OS / Chromium OS source code, one of our engineers (Jon Ursenbach), immediately got to work on compiling the code, trying to see if he could get an instance of Chromium OS running in a virtual machine. He was finally able to do it!
Helpful tips, if you download it:
1.) To use the vmdk file, open VMware and create a new virtual machine. One of the options will be to use an "existing virtual disk." (In VMware Fusion, this is the last option below, "use operating system disk" and "use OS disc image file.")
2.) Make sure your VM is set to use bridged networking, rather than NAT.
2.) The username and password to login to Chrome OS / Chromium OS is your google account!
Alternatively, if you don't have VMware, some users have had luck getting this image to run using VirtualBox, which is a free cross-platform (Windows / Mac / Linux) virtual machine created by Sun Microsystem. You can download VirtualBox here:
www.virtualbox.org/
Anyway, get downloading and try out Chrome OS! And definitely share your impressions.
Update: we now have downloads for VMWare, VirtualBox, and USB-install! (Watch out for the USB one, you need Linux and it's a bit tricky.) Stay tuned for more details, but share your tips, tricks, and notes!
Update 2: Paul Miller from Engadget made a video walk-thru:

i made chromium os build from lateset (June 2nd 2010) source code and got os image (.bin) but can't build vmware/virtualbox/livecd image. i installed virtualbox, vmware workstation, qemu on the Ubuntu 9.1 64bit, image_to_vmware.sh seems to run but it doesn't put out the vmdk, etc image! Please help me.
Started fine for me on VirtualBox (I'm on Ubuntu 10.04). I see how this would be a great OS for a netbook or a handheld PC, maybe like an iPod touch with a slightly larger screen. Not good for anything other than web browsing and using Google's online apps, but then again, what else are you really doing on a netbook?
Guys , everytime i try to logon on the OS , it says " network not connected or offline login fail " ,
i'm stucked on the login screen with the user name & password
please advice !
is there a default account like the administrator in windows ?

There is an alternative to using VMWare. I run linux as my desktop. but here is a post on how to try out Chrome OS with Virtual BOX.
Virtual BOX is for windows as well.

Hi there, i'm wondering if converting the vmdk to vhd, will it work on Windows Virtual PC? Has anyone tried this?
well i wouldn't use this link at all....
i tried this and it really was too much trouble to get it to work, so i used the download at chromeos.hexxeh.net/ with virtual box
it was alot better

I use his USB boot version. The reason I use his is because it is easy to contact him.
Did anybody else get spammed from this thread? I received over 100 emails last night yet this page hasn't been commented on in days.

Downloaded Chrome OS VM disk and had it installed with VMWare Fusion 3 in less than 5 minutes. However,
1. I got no sound yet.
2. When I logged in, The home page shows a red warning page:
"The Server's Security Certificate is revoked!"
I can still go to main page and explore other Google App like facebook, Pandora (no sound), Calendar and google reader.
3. The video is not optimum when I try to view it in full screen mode. I guessed Mac OS drivers are not yet working fully with Chrome OS through VMWare Fusion yet.
It is pretty boring on what I can do with Chrome OS VM here? I understand that it is still in Beta and it is running on hardware that is not certified by google yet.
So how can I fix the Server's Security problem here?

Who doesn't put a shutdown button in their OS. Isn't that one of the primary jobs of a computer --controlling the power state of the system.
