After Google announced the availability of the Chrome OS / Chromium OS source code, one of our engineers (Jon Ursenbach), immediately got to work on compiling the code, trying to see if he could get an instance of Chromium OS running in a virtual machine. He was finally able to do it!
Helpful tips, if you download it:
1.) To use the vmdk file, open VMware and create a new virtual machine. One of the options will be to use an "existing virtual disk." (In VMware Fusion, this is the last option below, "use operating system disk" and "use OS disc image file.")
2.) Make sure your VM is set to use bridged networking, rather than NAT.
2.) The username and password to login to Chrome OS / Chromium OS is your google account!
Alternatively, if you don't have VMware, some users have had luck getting this image to run using VirtualBox, which is a free cross-platform (Windows / Mac / Linux) virtual machine created by Sun Microsystem. You can download VirtualBox here:

Anyway, get downloading and try out Chrome OS! And definitely share your impressions.

Will this install on anything other then VMWare or is it just limited to that. I really want to try and load it onto my acer netbook to mess around with since i don't care for jolicloud and my netbook remix is all jacked up.
Keep us posted, I have been anxious to try it since it was annouced. I would imagine thought that he is not the only one, but the first i have heard to compile it. Congrats to him.
You have to install ubuntu and make your own bootable version...its very complicated.

Sadly, I can't get the thing to work. It took me a while to figure out how to get it to boot from the ChromeOS disk in the latest VMware player (Hint: make a new, blank machine, then add the ChromeOS disk as extra hardware, remove the default blank disk, then change the ChromeOS disk to IDE:0:0).
I'm now at the logon screen, but Chrome can't see any network connectivity. A quick Google suggests that VMware player has all kinds of network issues with 64-bit OS hosts.
I'm now on a quest to see if I can get it to work in VirtualBox, whose networking I have tested and know works. Wish me luck!

No such luck. I tried running the vmdk in VirtualBox (a much, much easier setup - I didn't have to fool it it into working this time), but even after trying all 5 of the network cards available, I can't get it to let me log on.
All cases used NAT, and I haven't had any issues with irtualizing other OSs. Running Win7 Pro 64-bit.
Any suggestions?

Looks like we're in the same boat. I'm running 64-bit Windows 7 Professional. :/
I was able to get up and running with VirtualBox with little issue. I'm using the Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop network adapter in Bridged mode.
Yep that worked for me too. Just make sure you select the right adapter to bridge to in the second drop down. So if your on wifi select your wifi adapter.
Vmware on Snow Leopard works fine.
It didnt work in the beginning but i clicked to disconnect the bridged network adapter and then reconnected and was able to logon fine with my google logon id.

Its just a browser? And google apps, gmail etc in a browser.

So I dont understand why I would only want a browser based OS.

Google, being at the forefront of online development are attempting to change the way we use computers.
What with cloud computing on the rise GoogleOS will take advantage of "anything, anywhere", rather then having an Operating System with static applications and documents.
The idea is you can access all your data from any location using "cloud" applications. Admittedly, certain applications such as Games aren't quite ready to go into the "cloud" but this is the early stages of things to come.
I welcome GoogleOS for what it can achieve, but until applications such as Games can be distributed on this platform I personally will stick with the more robust OS'.

I was having trouble with VMWare as well so I tried Virtual Box instead just create a new machine and select the Virtual Hard Disk you downloaded and boom it works networking and the mouse. Heres a pic of Chrome OS running in Virtual box and the setting I used.

Using VMWare 3.0. under Snow Leopard it works fine.
Just make sure you select 'Bridge' Networked and deselect 'auto detect'.

I'm also having the same problem with VM 3.0 in Snow Leopard.
I don't see how changing the Autodetect setting will fix it. Doesn't that just tell VMWare which NIC to use? i.e. Airport, Ethernet, etc.

Shutting down the virtual machine and quitting/restarting VMware fixed it for me.

Odd. Have you shut off the instance, changed the settings and restarted it? Try cycling VMWare/Virtualbox off and on, and if you've recently installed whichever software you're trying to use try and power cycle your machine.
If after that it still doesn't work, I'm not quite sure what's up. Anybody have any ideas?

i have the network setup as bridged like Dave said to do and i get this message twitpic.com/q75sd i also tried it as NAT and got the same thing. its a 13inch MBP running fusion 3. any advice? edit: never mind after restarting VMware it works now.
I set the connection to bridged at the login screen, and all worked fine. The only other settings I have changed are to use two processors and more memory, but I doubt that has much effect on anything.
