Microsoft Xbox One

The new Xbox is coming!
details
Today is the day that Microsoft unveils the new Xbox—it's been eight years since the Xbox 360 was unveiled to the public, a year before Nintendo and Sony unleashed their own seventh generation consoles. This time around Microsoft is actually last to the party, with Nintendo already having released the Wii U and Sony having done their own unveiling (well, not really) of the PlayStation 4. Last time the year-long head start may have really helped the Xbox gain dominance over its rivals, so what... Read more →
Sony PlayStation Vita (NGP, PSP 2)

by kris

So, the PlayStation 4.
details
The event is still going on now, but some of the key points:
  • No backwards compatibility with PS3, PS1 and PS2 will be streamed.
  • Remote play on Vita (like some PS3 games can do right now).
  • Games will no longer boot, they will download as you play them.
  • You can stream gameplay to your friends and even let them take control.
  • Developer-friendly, they say.
  • A companion social app will be available.
  • The PS4 will support PS Move.
  • New DUALSHOCK 4 controller!
  • All major third-party publishers will be making games....

With the Game Developer's Conference coming up next month, Sony's got a big event tonight, and the odds are good that what they'll be announcing is the next PlayStation home console, be it the "PlayStation 4" or the "Orbis" or whatever.
The details/rumor have been flying fast over the past year, and with Sony being notoriously tight-lipped about the system (even denying they were planning the next generation... Read more →

Sony PlayStation 2 1st-gen (PS2)

RIP PlayStation 2?
details
http://media.gdgt.com/img/product/3/2el/sony-playstation-2-3ek-640.jpg
Weekly Famitsu recently reported that shipments of the PlayStation 2 have ceased in Japan. So whatever stores have now in stock is it—gamers in the Land of the Rising Sun can no longer count on picking up a new PS2 (slimline) unit at their local electronics store. Now they'll have to resort to secondhand sales, or maybe it's time to move on to the PS3. Though it's worth nothing that the PS2 has one last gasp for Japan, in... Read more →

The future of portable gaming - dedicated handhelds or gaming tablets?
details
With the recent explosion in the popularity of mobile gaming, pundits have been forecasting the end of dedicated gaming consoles like the PlayStation Vita and the Nintendo 3DS, saying that these are increasingly becoming niche devices and that most people will be doing their gaming on their phones, on tablets, or on the iPod touch, the latter being advertised as a gaming device by Apple.
Then again, what does that say with the announcement of products like the Razer Project Fiona, a Windows 8... Read more →

New features for the site!
details
Can we have a best games section? I know it's tough to recommend competing against IGN, G4 and the like, but those websites have so many annoying ads that if I saw the same info in this nice clean layout without all the popups I would rather come here. It's also easier to comment on this site and saying that you own, want or have played certain games can be a topic of discussion between users. Being able to attribute a personal score to your library of games in a community would be nice too!

Ouya Android game console

by kris

Can an open gaming console like the Ouya succeed?
details
The Ouya is an Android game console that will be open to developers, hackable by its users, and offer free games—all for an enticing $99 price tag. It's being designed by Yves Behar (OLPC, Jawbone) and has Ed Fries (Xbox), Amol Sarva (Peek), Peter Pham (Color), and Julie Uhrman (IGN) backing it up.
All of this sounds like an absolute dream, but there's a reason it's been only a dream to this point. The cheap, open console idea has been tried before, most notably with the Indrema over 10 years... Read more →
