Awesome discussion idea!

1.) [browser] Chrome / Chromium - It may not have the extension support that Firefox does, but it runs so fast, and uses little memory, compared to the other sluggish browsers available on the Mac platform (Safari and Firefox).

2.) [media ripping] Handbreak - Definitely fantastic for encoding your video content.

3.) [media playback] Songbird - It's based on Mozilla (which means it can run sluggish and eat up memory for no reason), but it's the best open source alternative to iTunes around!

4.) [FTP] Cyberduck - Powerful and free FTP client.

5.) [virtualization] VirtualBox - open source virtual machine made by Sun. Pretty awesome (and free) VM. I use it for developing and testing websites using Windows or Linux (while still running OS X).

1.) Adium - very customizable chat client

2.) Onyx - essential utility for finding out those hidden preference, cleaning and/or maintaining the computer (most powerful and best free software I can find for this purpose)

3.) Transmission - simple multi-platform bittorrent client.

4.) The Unarchiver - for unzipping some of the most arcane compressed format.

5.) Caffeine - resides on the menu bar, overrides the computer's tendency to go into power-saving mode (dimmed screen), very useful when watching any kind of video.

(All apps above is still actively updated, I think all of them will work in Snow Leopard)
