Thus far I think my feelings about the iPad can be best summarized by a comparison, as it somehow reminds me of a vacation home.

You really can't wait to visit, and maybe one day in the future, when the timing is right, you can see yourself retiring there. But for right now, well, it's just not really where you want to live.

Of course, I wrote this post on an iPad. And yes, I feel like it might have gone a lot faster had I done so on a proper computer (whatever that means anymore).

Nice comparison. And that's why vacation homes exist. They have to be limited in a way to be 'vacation'. Otherwise, if the 'vacation home' feels like home, well, this is not good. It would be no fun, and there would be ne need to go on 'vacation'.

I wasn't sold on the iPad til I played with one at a local Best Buy. Furthermore I wasn't even sold on it being a tablet computing device, because it's a media consumption device. That's when I realized how amazing the iPad really is once I got over wanting it to be something it's not. It is indeed a fun vacation home, I mean the experience it gives you with consuming: books, magazines, games, movies, music, and social media apps are put into a whole new medium of User Interface that is pretty slick. I was going to wait like everyone else but I want my vacation home now haha.

Same here, I played with one the first time today, and am sold enough that I'll be getting one. But I'm waiting for a 3G, and probably not even right away, will likely wait and see if there are any big issues with 3G (which happens to work fine on AT&T where I live)

I love the "Vacation Home" analogy because the iPad discussions tend to parallel those people who brag about their "awesome 2nd house". You get jealous of the idea of them in their 'magical' 2nd house but when you ask them what they do there then 99% of it is the same stuff that they do at their "normal house", but more inconveniently because they left their "primary gear" at home.

But what makes me sick are all the people (especially the press) who act like typing an article on the beach, using netflix or showing off photos on the road was impossible before the iPad. I got one for my mom and am 'testing" it now and for her limited use then I think it'll work (email, web, youtube, photos). But I'm finding myself putting it down and going to my Macbook Pro because it definitely feel more like "home" since that's where ALL my stuff is.

As someone who has never had any first-hand experience with one (I live in the UK, we don't have them here yet) the biggest limitation seems to be the lack of multi-tasking.

@kythreotisg Based on leads that developers and OS-hackers have, supposedly OS 4.0 will support multitasking. And I do think Apple has to give in if they want to stay competitive. It's ridiculous that I can't listen to Slacker Radio while walking down the street and checking email at the same time. I don't mind jailbreaking, but this is part of the reason why I went to the Nexus One in January.

What I do think is nice about the iPad is that it covers many bases. For me it would be a great ebook reader. For someone else, a movie player. It's just that I can't justify spending $500 on one main function that it'd be used for.

I would also like to thank Ryan for helping to foster international relations of this sort. Any relations I may have with Keeley Hazell in the future would also be appreciated.

I have no pants. I need to forge some with some iPhones and iPads. Anyone willing to donate?

Hmmm, interesting. I would probably live in my vacation home if I could practically do it :).

Yeah, all the more reason I think the comparison works! For whatever the reasons, it's just impractical to live there, even if you wanted to.

My comparison would be a nice chair that gets comfortable after time. The only thing is, if you don't have $500, you sit on the floor.

I just realized the American Idol "song" Pants on the Ground has a significantly different meaning in Great Britain...

TMI alert:

Talking about pants (only in the UK sense) I realised recently that I change laptops several times more often than I change (out) my underwear.

e.g. for the last two years, not counting stuff at work for other people and what I have now, I've rotated out 3 Sony SZ's, 3 Sony Z's, 2 Sony TT's, 2 Sony TZ's, 4 Sony UX's, a Dell Adamo, 7~9 Macbook alus/Pros of various sizes, 4 Macbook Air's, 2 Dell XPS M1730's, 4 Dell Precision M6400's, 1 Lenovo X300, 1 Lenovo T400s, 1 each Toshiba R500 & R600... and I'm sure I've missed a few.

And in the same period of time, I've replaced about 6 pairs of underpants.

I either have something very right, or something very wrong.

what other meaning does "pants" have in the UK?

In my estimation, you must be the happiest man on earth :)

For you pants means trousers - for us, pants means underpants. It gets kinda confusing - my ex used to use the american way even though she's british. Could have lead to some very embarrassing situations!!

what the heck are trousers??!! I thought that was a kind of dog....

:P

does "knickers" only refer to womens garments?? this is all so confusing and enthralling!!

yep knickers are for women only. I think enthralling may be putting it just a little bit too strongly!!

For all further information I'm referring to my nearest oracle on the subject (ironically enough based in america!) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trousers

Jesus christ, this is a weird-arse thread that I keep getting in my inbox for some reason.

I guess, if you were British like I was, you could say I'm 'getting my knickers in a twist' about it.

just FYI, we haven't said trousers in the states for about 100 years now....

also enthralling and knickers for me go hand in hand...

I would also like to thank you personally for www.page3.com/ (NSFW!!!)

it is honestly the best thing to come out of England since The Beatles!!!!!!!!!!!!

(and I'm seriously the biggest Beatles fan in all of the land across the pond! ;)

Having just seen the oratorical masterpiece that is "pants on the ground", I would like to respond with one of the most culturally sensitive and professional things I've seen in a long time: bit.ly/9jTsqV

"why are you arguing with me when I just saved your life?!"

thanks for that! I might need to play Halo super late tonight to exchange pleasantries with more Brits... what a great day for diplomacy!

If you play late then there's no way there'll be any brits on. Time difference goes the other way. However don't let me discourage you from playing halo. That’s always worthwhile even without us brits!

strange, I have only ever played Halo with Brits/Aussies/Frenchies super late at night... like around 1-5 A.M. CST...
