Thoughts on the Macbook Pro with Retina Display?
I feel like this is another "game changer" as Apple likes to call things.
First up is the new display, at 2880 x 1800 in a glossy (although reduced glare) IPS panel. This is the new target for laptop manufacturers to achieve, and I feel like it will take a while for them to catch up. Windows 8 will support high resolution displays, so we will have to wait until at least then.
Also: The price. At $2199, it is the same price as the higher spec 15" non-retina MacBook pro. The retina-display model will probably kill the sales of the non-retina model, unless people need more RAM and SSD space on a budget.
That being said, there is an incredible amount of technology jammed into the next-generation MBP and at $2200 it is quite attractive. I want one.

Biggest update to the Macbook Pro in years. Certainly set the standard for laptops for years to come as well.
It took 3 Weeks and a sizable commission in June but "I has it," now. Created an 80 GB Partition in Bootcamp and Microsoft Word and Excel fly on it. I hope Chrome, Twitter and Mozilla update there code to take advantage of the Retina because after using it you don't want to go back.
A Chrome update is on the way www.theverge.com/2012/6/13/3083877/chrome-gets-ear.... However, an update for the browsers won't make all the difference. Your still going to see a lot of ugliness across the web, because 99% of the web is not optimized for a HiDPI display.
Definitely a game changer. I was hoping they would introduce a 13" though
This is definitely a "game changer" in laptops. Apple just did to pro users what they did to consumers with the Air.
I think that we are going to be hearing about the wonders of this for years to come.

It seems like a fantastic product, and the pricing / positioning seems what you'd expect from Apple. However, I'm wondering, why didn't Apple also introduce a 13" MBP with Retina Display? Would that simply result in too many models or price overlaps with the other non-Retina MBPs? ie. You could choose between a 13" Retina MBP or a same-price 15" non-Retina MBP... I guess in time they'll trickle down the Retina displays to the other laptops.
Also, RIP MBP 17" - The Retina display has made it obsolete. Once again, Apple kills one product category by introducing another.

I could see this being the new line of MBPs and the current non-retina MBPs line being merged with the Air line.
You're right about the consumer price point but if history is an example then the price will come down as Apple's supply chain does what it does and the specs of this device are shared with their other MacBooks.
This is certainly empirically the best Macbook yet. That being said, I'm relatively nonplussed. The retina display is great, but to me it seems like only the natural next step, since all of Apple's devices have been heading this way for a while. I actually think the most interesting technology is the new asymmetric fan designed to seemingly reduce noise. This is certainly the future of computer design.
It must be the PC guy in me, but the one thing I would want from this product is more customization options. But I realize that's not how Apple operates, and that's fine. I will not be getting a Macbook anytime soon, but that is more due to price than anything else.

I think the lack of custimization options may be due to the lack of performance upgrades that could be implemented in a laptop of this size. The thing that excites me about the MBP with retina display is that it's simultaneously pushing portability and performance boundaries. The original MBA was certainly an impressive machine from a design and portability perspective, but a lacking performer. The MBP with retina display is the sveltest (?) computer in the Pro lineup and also the best all-round performer.
It has been proven through analysis that you can provide expandability in a laptop of this size. You could allow the SSD to be easily replaced and you could allow RAM to be upgraded instead of soldering it to the motherboard.
I think this update is great! I really can't believe it took this long to up the resolution on their laptops. I unfortunately bought a new MBP 15" last year and added the higher resolution display option which still doesn't fit full 1080P. I really want this update but my laptop is too new to replace for just a monitor... I was mostly hoping they'd announce a new cinema display with retina so I could finally get a large monitor and also take advantage of the super high resolution at the same time.
I agree with you about display resolution. After getting an iPhone 4, my laptop screen has never again been tolerable. Before this computer was announced, no laptop had a satisfactory screen in a Retina iPhone and iPad world. I believe this computer will be a swift kick-in-the-pants for all computer manufacturers to increase the resolution of their displays.
Watching the live blog I was a bit meh on it, but after watching the video they did talking about it (viewable here https://www.apple.com/macbook-pro/), I'm completely sold.
I just wish it were cheaper.

If you like vents you'll love... I'd say this a great "wait for the second gen" product. They clearly pushed for the highest end to justify what was an incredibly expensive display. Next year this screen will come to most, if not all of the product line. Plus any thermal issues from the gen 1 will be ironed out. Maybe the fans will play soothing music to you also?
Speaking of issues, Apple doesn't have the best track record when introducing new displays. iMacs have mainly been the focus of screen discolouration, but a few problems were seen on iPads and their laptops. Sometimes it was light leakage.
It will be interesting to see if Apple can pull off a flawless launch of the MBP retina

This is the very likely the future of desktop computers as we know it. It takes everything Apple has learned from making products and focuses it all on one MacBook. Eventually Apple will have one iPhone, one iPad, and one Mac.
As for the price, it's pretty steep but considering what's packed inside, you can't really complain!

Undoubtedly this is the most advanced Mac they have ever built. Finally Apple has succeeded in bringing retina display in slimmest ever Mac book. Which is truly awesome! With all the advanced features and high battery backup (almost 7 hrs) this is surely going to be one of the most popular product from Apple.

It is beautiful, powerful, simple, pure... and I would like to have one! :)
The only thing I'm disappointed about is the fact of new MacbookPro line coming up in Europe, cost about more 350to600€ that in US.
I don't know if you can see this image I made about this big different value from the same product:
https:Â/Â/lh5.googleusercontent.comÂ/Â-ctZvCjztVV4Â/T9Z...
...but it is kind of impossible to pay about 2.000€/2.515$ for the weak and first model of the 15'MacBookPro series.

I guess it's alright to play a little on the go, but games look *so* ugly when they're not run at native resolution. with the awesome new resolution, you kind of double the ugliness. My 17-inch MacBook Pro has trouble keeping up with the game at 1980*1200 at the lowest settings.
I doubt any graphic-intensive game developer will do any extra work to make things work on Mac. But most just shove every DirectX operations through an OpenGL converter. There's not that much they can do, anyways, apart from making uglier games. You can't possibly ask Ubisoft to spend more money on ports that won't bring them that much money anyway.
Angry Birds will run just fine, sure.
I'd just want to go all Mac, but I still need a PC to play games, sadly.
I'm still hoping for a non-retina slim MacBook Pro. Parentheses are round enough for me.

I've seen Elder Scrolls Oblivion played on a Macbook Pro without any issues and played and pretty high settings. Just because it is a Mac doesn't mean that game is going to look like garbage.
Well I ordered one as soon as I was able so that should tell you what I think, I was going to order a new laptop regardless, had been holding out until Apple announced their ivy bridge refresh but this is much more then I expected.
It's pricy for sure but worth the cost to me.

Apple has once again challenged the status quo in the legacy PC hardware world. The retina display MacBook Pro is a bit pricey simply because of the higher than normal costs incurred to manufacture those panels in huge numbers. Clearly this machine is targeted at the professional user who feels Apple has neglected them for a while by focussing on the consumer and mobile user.
Another issue is that high capacity flash storage is still not that cheap to purchase.
However, by eschewing the optical drive, the wired network & the FireWire ports, Apple is taking yet another bold step by standardising the IO on their machines (thunderbolt & USB 3).
The new MacBook Pro packs in a world of advanced technology, in a much thinner & lighter package which still offers great battery life, a sturdy product & a user experience that remains to be matched. The display is the canvas through which the user interacts with content, visually experiences the benefits of new powerful technology. The retina display offers the best canvas out there & breaks the monotony of the stagnancy in displays and pushes the envelope higher.
This is the future of all of Apple's notebooks and the retina display will make its way to the other product lines in the Mac family as the display becomes more cost effective to manufacture.

oh come on people, is everyone at engadget and here apple fanboys or what? with all the new and different designs for the new touch ultrabooks, I would never consider an apple. and all you people can do is emphasis on the retina display, while apple itself gave a push to touch technology with the iphone, and still doesnt have a touch notebook. not that I love tablets, but I'd like to have the touch option on a notebook, it is useful in many occasions
I like apple and this is apple news. I'm sure the touch ultrabooks are good but I don't want to use a windows computer. Personally I don't see the need for touch on my laptop. I want the computer to stay a computer and not have everything turned into a touch screen interface.
Touch technology in a notebook at this point is useless. It is solely a gimmick being brought forth to try to sale notebooks to people who may buy a tablet instead.
Apple isn't about gimmicks which is why you don't have touch in their notebooks.
Personally I don't want it.
