Discussion about
This or the Lumix LX-3
My research so far tells me that the two cameras are essentially identical in their inner workings. And some argue that all I will be paying for is the Leica brand. Is there truth to this? I am looking to use the camera as a P&S, specifically at low light condition. Will one camera works better than the other in this case? Thanks in advance!
More or less. I'm not sure what the differences are - and depending on who you talk to (and their perceived value of a few hundred bucks) there are various different differences, but it is essentially a reworked LX3. Personally I just couldn't deal with the "MEGA OIS" etc branding that Pana sticks on their sometimes decent-looking cameras when there was a plainer alternative available, as in this case.
Ask yourself. If you buy a LX3 are you going to be happy?
If you think you'll buy the LX3 and long for the red dot then buy the red dot. Unless you're opting for the Titanium version :-) I use mine our with friends in bars etc a fair amount and it performs well for me in low light. I have seen posts saying the LX3 can act up now and again in low light and be slow focusing but this may not be a consistent issue across a large number of users.
Take into account the extra 2 year warranty.
The Capture One software.
The resale value of the Leica.
D-Lux 4 and LX 3 have different lens coating.
I personally much prefer the look and feel of the Leica over the Panny. I also got a 'free' brown leather Leica case with mine. Oh and you get to be a entry level Leica owner which means you're accepted into Leica owner world.

Supposedly the JPEG processing is "Leica" so it has lots of that Leica look and feel (some call it "character"). Side by side the JPEGs will look slightly different, but if you look at the RAW image, they are identitical. I read this in many many other review sites. I ended up with the Panasonic DMC-GF1.
