This is about nearly every Froyo handset, but the Bionic is a perfect example of the new wave.
The entire design theory with 95% of Android phones seems to be entirely off, like manufacturers care more about impressing the user with how large, thin, futuristic/mechanical or just plain shiny the phone is rather than creating lasting, high quality designs, ala the iPhone 4 and some Windows Phone 7 phones, even Palm's devices have a very nice look to them, despite being made out of cheap materials.
At first, I thought it was just one round of phone suffering from this beastification(the incredible, the X, the Droid 2(a shame as the orignal Droid was beautiful), everything Att gets) but with this new round of "4G" devices(the bionic and the cliq 2 along with the new Galaxy S and Sony Ericsson devices) it's clear that this is a trend that won't be going away anytime soon.
This goes for the hardware along with the soft buttons and the disgusting skins.
That's not to say that good looking Android devices don't exist, but at this point I believe there are only 2, the G2 and the Nexus S(the transformation from the Nexus 1 to the Nexus S is a perfect example of what I'm talking about).
Right now I have a Palm pre plus and it's sad that a year after its release there's nothing on Verizon that I would seriously consider "upgrading" to. Hopefully the iPhone and Wphone7 come to Verizon soon, or perhaps HTC and/or Motorola can get their shit back together and release something that's actually good looking.
I won't even bother with 3.0(Ok, I will...I think it looks terrible).
tl;dr I think Android is getting uglier

I completely agree. I have a friend who constantly says he would switch if someone could design a good phone like the iPhone 4. Everything coming out is just plastic and that's kind of disheartening. Maybe with CES ending we'll get some reports of phones feeling more well built.
In the terms of physicality, it just feels solid. Much like picking up a MBP and a HP laptop, the MBP just feels like a well built solid device.
That's what we're getting at. Android is a great mobile OS and provides a lot of awesome features but is it too much to ask to have a well built phone that doesn't feel like cheap plastic.
