The upcoming iPad 3

A number of sources are speculating that the new iPad 3, which is expected to be announced within the next two months, could possibly see an increase in resolution, a new processor, thinner and lighter design, and an improved camera.

What do you think the next iPad will look like? What changes would you like to see most?

If apple sticks with tradition I am sure we will see the following:
  • · New processor
  • · Improved Camera rear (possibly front?)
I am hoping for the better display but I am not really sure why other than that it would be cool. What does the improved pixel density really bring to the device?

I am hoping for the following:
  • · More RAM
  • · A tease to what iOS 6 will have
  • · SIRI added to the iPad
  • · 4G with Verizon and Sprint
I don’t except any changes on the design other than maybe they will find a way to make it thinner but I don’t really them needing to change the design and why would they?

Now my really out there guess is that they will introduce a 7 inch version.

I think we will definitely see Siri. Possibly more RAM but I would agree that it will be a short list.

I'm going to out on a limb and predict the iPad 3 will be a minimally designed rounded rectangle with an Apple logo on the back. ;)

In all seriousness, if they do announce an iPad 3 soon (which I am skeptical about) then in typical Apple fashion you'd see minor to moderate spec updates and hopefully a better camera. Nothing revolutionary, and I still don't see a retina display happening for another couple of generations.

Make of it what you will, but we have fairly solid evidence that Sharp is manufacturing 2048x1536 10" panels for Apple. Now, that would coincide fairly closely with a March release for an iPad 3, 1 year after the iPad 2 came out.

I think this far more likely than a 10" Macbook Air, given that in order to take advantage of that fine a resolution, OS X would have to have universal resolution independence - something for which there is good groundwork in place, but almost no application support.

We also have fairly solid evidence that Apple is preparing (and probably already manufacturing) a quad-core A6 processor that uses a 28nm production process, probably based on the ARM Cortex A-9 core, that will significantly lower the power requirements for the CPU, and increase it's speed.

I would be surprised if both of these would be ready entirely for a March release. June, perhaps.

A retina display along with similar or better battery life as an iPad 2 is all I could ask for. These features would make the iPad 3 a kick ass E-reader that I've always wanted.

Here's what I see coming in iPad 3:

Given
  • Retina Display
  • Faster clock speed on processor (1.5Ghz hopefully)
  • Siri
  • Better cameras in the front and back
Hopeful
  • Quad-core processor
  • 1GB RAM

My wish list:
-1GB RAM
-128GB capacity

The A5 chip is still a great chip. Heck, even the A4 chip is still good. The amount of RAM is the bottleneck. My iPhone 4 experience is better than my iPad 1, despite it having lower clockspeed of the A4 (iPhone 4 has 512MB RAM, while the iPad 1 only has 256MB RAM).

i think it has to be in a much better form factor or design to warranty people to get the upgrade
aka, from iPhone 3GS to iPhone 4, a major change..
same form factor but larger screen,
much higher resolution
much better camera
Siri

I would look for a retina display and a new form factor or new design elements, if it were to be called the iPad 3. In other words, those would be the features I would consider to be major differences.

What would I like to see?

Hardware:
2X x 2X resolution increase, e.g. retina display. FaceTime HD front camera (1280x720). Who cares about the back camera? MUCH lighter. No thinner. Battery life not much lower, and maybe sleep time battery life improved. AirPlay more reliable. Siri.

An improved CPU? More interested in video decoding and GPU performance than some stupid specs game. The current iPad 2 is plenty fast in most respects.

A smaller model, whatever works to Apple's standards, say 8.9" at the current resolution? For $399 base price?

Bump up the flash storage one tier. Be especially nice (but unlikely) if they'd do this without a price increase.

Support GPS on the Wi-Fi only model.

Software:

How about facial tracking for 3D games?

Better/more magazines optimized for iPad display.

Siri support for 3rd party applications.

Some additions to what can be done in the background, for example letting my Podcaster application update itself completely in the background rather than only after it refreshes in the foreground.

Some minor tweaks to the notifications.

Remove Carrier IQ.

If I had to lobby for a favorite it would be some tweaks to the 4x4 grid of icons and pages metaphor. Allow me to locate an icon by search. Allow me to more easily reorganize and create pages without a computer. Maybe even some dynamic icons like say displaying the current weather on the icon itself. Folders that can hold more.

Actually let me add one more thing--moving the dock connector to the side. I suppose they could duplicate it, but that seems very un-Apple like. The whole keyboard dock thing just screams for a side-dock. Nobody can do a keyboard properly (see Asus Transformer Prime) with the current arrangement. As laptop and iPad merge, using the iPad sometimes in landscape with a keyboard seems like an obvious tweak for some. Apple makes a lot of money from accessories, and making this move, perhaps in combination with moving to a different connector (mini-dock, micro-dock?) seems like something to hope for.
