The quick camera feature in iOS 5 is actually pretty neat...
One of the things that iOS 5 introduced is the ability the quickly open the camera from the lock screen by double clicking the home button. I was thinking about this earlier in the morning and noticed that I've subconsciously been using it to take most of my photos. Check out the steps below (it sounds complicated, but it ends up being pretty fast).
Let's say I'm reading gdgt while on the bus. All the sudden, some crazy guy whips out a light saber. Obviously, I want to take a picture of this.
Hit the lock switch at the top of the phone. Now my phone is "off". Quickly double tap the home button, and then hit the camera button.
Wait however many seconds / minutes for the camera app to load up (which you'd have to wait for anyway).
Take picture and be on your merry way!
I actually think this process for capturing a photo is quicker than the alternative: Hit home button. Scroll around trying to find out where the blasted camera icon is. Maybe you're a few screens away. Go to search instead. Type camera, which auto corrects to something like "chimera." Get frustrated and retype it. Finally open up the camera app only to find that the guy with the light saber got off the bus. Now no one will believe you.
Anyway, it's definitely come in handy. And I find it's become my preferred way for taking photos from my iPhone. Is anyone else using it?
Yeah, I use it all the time. But I wish there were a way to access the camera from the multitasking bar. In the situation you described above my instinct is to double-tap the home button even though the phone is already on which just brings up the multitasking bar. Seems like it would be easy enough to add a button for it near the music controls.
Agreed Dave, it's pretty awesome. Just today I learned of something that makes it even more awesome. You can use the volume up button on your headphones to take a picture too!
I have found myself using this feature almost all the time, rather than like you said, trying to find my camera app. It comes in handy especially when you just want to take a quick photo, and don't need to post it or send it somewhere right away.
