The iPad dock sucks radioactive monkey testicles.
What are my alternative options for something that doesn't actually lift off the table with the iPad?
One potential option is a lot of super glue and one of these:

It might also help with the radiation problem... ;)

That is the same gripe I have with it. While it is fairly heavy for its size, it's not heavy enough. They really should have designed it with finger "cups" on both ends of the dock so it is easier to grip when you try to remove the ipad.
While the Apple dock is cosmetically elegant, I am still waiting for some other vendor to come out with something more practical.

I just ordered a five dollar iPad dock knock off from Hong Kong on eBay. I was actually really pleased with the four dollar slip cover case I ordered on eBay. Gets it from point A to point B without damage. Hopefully the dock will do the same. If it stands it up while charging it then it does its job. After spending $700 on my iPad I refuse to pay $40 for a case and $30 for a dock. The fact that you can get a $5 dock on eBay from Hong Kong tells you about the profit margin Apple has on these things. It's ridiculous.
I love how people say this and slaver over Apple products all the same.
Now you're talking to a guy whose laptop bags costs more than most people spend on a laptop, so I can't say I have the same sense of value - I appreciate design and I will pay for it (although in the case of Apple in general, I would also be willing to pay for proper engineering for actually professional use on their Pro-branded gear, but apparently that's not something they've got around to yet).
In fact, when you - as many do apparently from what I read on the internets - wonder to yourself 'I wonder what kind of guy buys a Balmuda (www.balmuda.com/en/products/) stand?' - look no further than ArmpitOfDeath.
Casewise I'm waiting for the Incipio Destroyer Overkill (www.amazon.com/Incipio-Destroyer-OVERKILL-Apple-iP...). Because, well, once again, I am that kind of guy.
However, even I'm probably not in the mood to blow 300+ on an iPad dock. A hundred for a really nice one? Yeah, why not.

Not like I care a great deal what other people think, but even as I wrote it, I knew the above post would likely attract a flurry of downvotes :p
Anyhoo - having undocked it a few times, I am kind of warming to the superglue + lead brick arrangement. Although the brick would have to be refashioned into something suitably Bauhausian...
