Expecting there to be at least one more MacBook Pro release, Would it be All SSD or an SSD/Hard Drive Combo with optical drive?
The other direction would be a 15" Air with more RAM, i7 Proc & more interfaces to serve as a Pro and as an Air.
Discussion about
The future of MacBook Pro or Air?
MBA will have 3 models, 11, 13 and 15 inches while the Pro will only have the 17 inch model moving forward. I see opportunity for a 15 inch MBP, but I'm not sure if it's needed. Maybe they'll keep it around for another year, but you definitely won't see a 13 inch MBP any more.
The MBA is the sexiest laptop right now. Apple knows how to give the people what they want. There will no doubt be obvious upgrades to both, I'm not sure about all SSD MBP, that would drive the cost up significantly when Apple can just make it standard quad core, with an option for 6 or 8 core and upgrade the RAM and graphics.
The Air is going to have everything you mention and I believe Apple has to keep the optical drive on the MBP, maybe it will be an option? MBP buyers would like the laptop to be lighter, but wouldn't that make it too much like MBA?
I'm most excited for the quad core iPad 3. I'm not an iPad owner and never planned on purchasing one since I have an iPhone 4, but upon hearing that a $500 tablet can outperform any laptop at that price and most that are double the price is very enticing. It's definitely needs an upgraded display as well. I may just dive into the new iPad instead of buying a new laptop to replace my 5 year old Toshiba Satellite and I think many others would agree with my view if the rumors are true.

when a 15inch MBP is coming there is defenately one thing to expect:
no optical bay.
I'm fine with that. But what is the next thickest component? Yes, it is the 2.5 inch standard sized SSD.
I'd love this to be user replaceable as SSD's are going down in price. But knowing Apple they could just solder it on the motherboard like with the MB air...

Regardless of what Cook wants to tell us, we are not in the "Post-PC Era." While the market for the Air will continue to grow, the MacBook Pro will be around for the forseeable future because you just can't pack the same specs into a case that small. Regardless of how small processors, RAM, SSDs, etc. become, you will always be able to fit in more of them or a bigger battery into the Pro's case.
I don't think we are in a Post-PC Era either. I still prefer to carry a 13" Air than an iPad and the tower architecture will be needed for high level workflows. But if you agree that there's no longer a need to carry around an optical drive then a 15" Air should be able to do everything expected of a 15" Pro. With the additional real estate inside a 15" platform it woud seem that if not right now then in the very near future the Air format should be able to contain the additional RAM and mass storage necessary for "Pro" specs. Plus my 13" Air already has an i7 processor so that's taken care of and battery time is already extended. In fact I'm sure it can be done right now, it's just a matter of time to let the prices of the additional storage to normalize.
