The Book Thief (actual not literary)

I aim to buy an ebook reader sometime soon but given I'll be using it to replace the stack of books I tend to fill my suitcase up with on holidays, I was wondering if anyone had any tips on keeping it safe while alternating between the sun-lounger and surf?

I've never seen anything like a Kensington lock on them.

Feedback much appreciated. I guess I'll:

a) Stick to real paper for now
b) Hope that the ipad relegates prices to that of a real book!?
c) have to send back my existing Kensington lock, lol

And besides, does a Kensington really work in practice, especially with anything mobile?

I've seen e.g. a few Powerbooks / Macbook Pros which have the Kensington port torn up to hell. I've asked about it and they all got theirs cheap on Craigslist / Gumtree. It's amazing the excuses these guys have (to explain to themselves more than anyone else, I guess) to deny the absolutely obvious - but at the same time, I guess if they didn't buy it someone else would.

I also remember an acquaintance's office which got burgled - the laptops / desktops were locked so what did they do? They kicked off the legs and took the entire desk surfaces with them.

Assuming there was a Kensington lock what would you secure it to on the beach? Okay, well, proceeding under the assumption there's something to lock the device to and that you invest in something a little more secure than a Kensington lock (many of which are easily defeated by trivial means, check YouTube)... the easiest way to secure a variety of devices and small objects is to use something like a bank-deposit bag.

They're extremely sturdy, have giant interlocking zipper teeth with a lock at the end, and a cable to secure it to objects. It's typically for transporting large sums of cash or valuables, but they'll work to secure your small electronics, wallet, watch, etc. while you swim... just don't lose your keys.

Anyone determined can defeat it, but it'll ward off causal thieves or even good Samaritans looking to put someone's valuable device somewhere appropriate, after all, they'd think, "Who would leave this just laying out here unattended?"

Seriously, the only way to keep it safe is to either not being it along, or have someone watch over it. Even if it had a kensington lock, a pissed-off thief might be likely to smash it out of spite.

Permanently (as in with Krazy Glue) accessorise it with Hello Kitty accoutrements?

Seriously - there are places for e-books and paper ones. Sheesh. Use your common sense / gauge your wallet's ability to ignore the odd loss.
