Supposedly the 3DS has a built-in pedometer that tracks your steps, and awards you "Game Coins" which can be used to purchase bonus game content.
Looks like they're taking a page out of the Pokémon playbook:

The Pokéwalker doesn't (or isn't supposed to) register brisk shaking, so I would assume the 3DS has the same protection.
