So the iPad is basically a big ass iPod touch. And this is bad why?

I keep hearing this complaint, but I never hear any explanation about why it's a bad thing. Isn't a bigger version of the iPod touch what people have basically been asking for out of Apple? I wasn't looking for a device to replace my main laptop, but I wanted something more comfortable to use than my iPhone. For me, the iPad seems to fill this gap neatly. Call me crazy, but I think Apple took the right approach here: if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

thanks for asking this question 3 times.... its not bad. just call it an iPod Touch XL. not the revolutionary end all device to change everyones computing habits for all times. aka the intersection of technology and art....

Exactly! The minute I heard someone refer to this device as the iPod Touch XL it seemed much more reasonable.

Apple already sold a 10" iPod touch?

coologuy1957

they already sold an ipod touch... thats what this is with a larger screen.. the name change is purely arbitrary... I'm beginning to think someone just misspelled "ipod"...

all my buddies who have ipod touches just say "i just wish the ipod would have 3G already...."

Also known as an iPhone. Did they give us "something they already sell" when they released the iPod Touch?

"Man this is just an iPhone without the phone."

The 27" iMac?

"Man this is just a big ass 21" iMac"

The HDTV?

"Man this is just a TV set that looks awesome"

I could go on, but I hope this illustrates the silliness of calling it "a big iPod touch" to it's detriment. There are of course some things wrong with the iPad. The fact that it's essentially a larger, (faster, more featured, more comfortable) iPod touch is not one of them.

coologuy1957

now to reiterate the sillyness of this all, back to your iMac analogy...

if they had a 21" iMac, and they had an event saying "come check out our new CREATION"....

and they showed a 27" iMac...

yes people would be pissed and say "thats just a big ass iMac!"

and they would be pissed because it was nothing new

thanks for your help....

The iPhone is small device that runs the iPhoneOS. All the iPad does is run a more verbose version of the iPhoneOS, but is larger. Most developers run into the problem with the iPhone being too small of a screen and being limited to list-based applications. The iPad eliminates this option and provides users with a larger screen so that developers can not be "limited" to only list-based applications. While the iPhone provided what we thought was a plethora of possibilities for applications, this gives developers even more possibilities to create applications.

While websites like Hulu and Break may not work for now, they will create applications that bridge off their exisiting web applications native for the iPad and other devices. What's funny is that people do not understand that through APIs, we can now remove the line between web applications and native applications. Apple wants developers to create APIs. Creating the iPad/iPhone version is easy, but this also means it can be on other devices as well. Stop being a moron, there is a lot you can do on the iPad. I'm personally excited for the device, but it'll be rough at first until developers start making applications for it.

@coologuy1957 So, in your example the only specification that has changed was the screen size of the iMac. (Of course the weight would change as well. Maybe a new processor mixed with the upgrade, but you didn't say that). The iPad has a larger screen size, it is running a modified version of the iPhone OS, it has a more capable processor, but less battery life. Yes, it has some similar features to the iPod Touch, of course it does. If something works, then stick with it. How many iPod Touches has Apple sold?

In your example, the screen size moved from 21" to 27", a ~25% increase in screen size.
The real key to the iPad is that 9.7" display; a 177% step up in screen size from the iPod Touch. That's basically like comparing your typical 15" laptop to a 27" display hooked up to a desktop computer.

Yes, Apple is going a little overboard with their marketing, but after all, what do expect it to be like. Just remember, Apple are still trying to sell you something.

the point is there is nothing revolutionary, nothing magical about even a 177% bigger screen.... the hype and apples own superlatives are ridiculous and no apple fanatic can justify it.... it is fun reading y'all trying to though!! :P

It is amazing how people cant seem to get that. Of course these are all the same people who couldnt get out and buy windows 7 fast enough even though ITS THE SAME DAMN OS they have been selling for 12 years. And the exactly same patched version they have been selling for the past 2 years. Which is the same OS they have been installing on every computer they ever owned without question.

But a large screened tablet that runs a variation of a mobile OS is crazy. Again these will be the same people that freak out about how awesome the Google tablet is when all it can do is run internet apps.

While Flash is still used by a number of web sites, Hulu perhaps chief among them, it is on the decline and likely headed out the door. I agree that Apple may be ushering it out a bit prematurely, but I can see what they're going for. Ultimately, though, the lack of Flash does not prevent an iPad user from viewing the majority of web content. It's very rare nowadays that I come across a web site on my iPhone that requires Flash. Most that use Flash on the desktop browser have Flash-free versions that work great. I don't expect the majority of users to have a problem with it. And if Hulu ever comes out with an HTML5 version of the site, most of these cries for Flash will completely evaporate.

The larger screen puts it in an entirely different category than the iPod Touch. It's amazing to me that you can't see that.

The do make an ipod touch with 3g wireless support, its called The iPhone. I thought that making a Touch with a sim card slot would be a good idea, apparently so did Apple. That's what the iPad is. A gi-normous ipod touch and thats NOT a bad thing. it may not be anything revolutionary but I think it will open the door for even better apps. I'm particularly looking forward to wireless midi control on a bigger screen for dj sets and production. As a promoter it will be great to use the ipad for street team marketing events. There are quite a few good reasons why I will buy one. COOL FACTOR is not one of them, but it will certainly serve it's purpose and could get better with specific applications.

As a phone and PDA, I still prefer and use a blackberry , but Apple despite all the negatives has made palm sized computing a reality at a relatively affordable price. If people are looking for something orgasmic, or something that will make them cool, they are in for a life of disappointment and sadness.

You do know that companies sell laptops with different sized screens right? When the first netbooks came out with a 7.6" screen that was simply too small didnt they start coming out with 10" screens that people liked? Does that mean the 10" version is useless or a 15" laptop.

You people keep making these asanine arguments without anything to say other than "i hate it, cause its big".

i thought this was great when i first saw it, but! i realized it does not come with a software package that allows word processing filing, excel sheets or that kind of stuff,i noticed that it also does not support flash in the web browser, if u want a cross between a notebook and a smartphone it needs to do more notebook stuff!! and no camera, left out intentionally for next years upgrade

Wait, what about iWork? That allows you to create and edit word, powerpoint, and excel files, no? And I really don't think Apple was going for a cross between a notebook and a smartphone. I think they just wanted a bigger iPod touch with a much faster processor - basically, yet another platform for the iPhone developers out there to develop for. It's better to have more than less, I think.

As for the camera, why does every device in the world need to have a crappy camera attached to it? I barely use the one in my iPhone and laptop, and I really can't see a reason for having it on an iPad. I think Apple realized it was somewhat pointless, and chose to keep the cost down rather than include it.

No one really understands why you would be using a tablet for word processing OR spreadsheets, as sitting properly at a computer is a much better position for doing this kind of work.
However, if you are insistent on viewing or modifying said documents, the team at APPLE completely redesigned Numbers, Pages, and Keynote for the tablet. Each costs $10, but all three usually run $80 for the desktop.
Not familiar with Numbers,Pages,or Keynote? Maybe you shouldn't be owning a Mac, since support for Word, Excel, and Powerpoint basically ended in 2004 on OSX. Besides, documents from Word, Excel, and Powerpoint can open on Pages, Numbers, and Keynote, but there will be features that look bugeyed and wierd. Interestingly enough, you can save Pages, Numbers, and Keynote documents in Word, Excel, and Powerpoint format. But don't expect them to look good, nothing Microsoft does looks good.

Oh P.S.,
I hate to break this to you, but I can open Excel, Powerpoint, and Word documents on my Iphone (through the Dropbox service), SO, I assume they would work on the iPad as well.

You say you "shouldn't have to mess about with 3rd party apps" - like what? MS Office? Windows computers claim to "do so much out of the box" yet you have to buy and install Office if you want the Word and Excel functionality you're talking about. I don't see why having to buy iWorks apps for $10 is such a drawback...

Well, you're obviously a fringe case as most tech savvy people are in the eyes of Apple. They're not marketing this device toward tech geeks, they're marketing it toward home/business users. Nobody in that market cares if they can't transfer their files over bluetooth, or run multiple apps, or navigate the file system. They just want a device that does a few things very well, and that's what the iPad is going to be.

"Take a good product, make it bigger. That's the American way and it works!"???? This mode of thinking is terribly flawed when it comes to electronic devices. You know what I'm always thinking when I am using my trs-80? "Man! If this thing was just bigger, that would be awesome!"

Did you use a 15" monitor at one point? Did you upgrade to a 17? 19? 22? When you did upgrade to a bigger monitor did it improve your enjoyment of the machine and allow you to get more done?

Same thing, except you get more features by adding the big screen and not just a bigger screen.

KevinLWright

Actually, even when looking at monitors technically they have gotten smaller. Monitors while getting larger diagonally, have gotten smaller in mass. You still using your CRT monitor from the early 90's? My 22" HP LCD screen is significantly smaller than my 17" Compaq CRT monitor I had in the early 90's.

You're really missing the point. No one (but you) is talking about monitor mass. The point is, a device with iPod Touch-like functionality and a bigger screen is a breakthrough. Yes you are correct that, in general, the trend is towards smaller electronics, but obviously when it comes to screen real estate you can do more on a 9.7 inch screen vs. a 4.3 inch screen. Your response to this argument is that your new LCD monitor has less mass than your old CRT? Interesting fact, but hardly relevant.

Actually starxd, dillinger I believe was the one that brought up monitor size/mass. Perhaps you are not realizing that I was merely commenting that the idea of "Take a good product, make it bigger. That's the American way and it works!" was amusing as it is commonly the opposite in the electronics field. I absolutely agree that increasing screen real estate usually increases enjoyment and productivity. Of course, in this case I wouldn't necessarily agree with that. You can have the same amount of icons on each page on this device as far as I understand and you can only run a singular application at a time which, I would think, would severely inhibit productivity. From all the resources currently available I would have to say that Apple is letting a large amount of that real estate go to waste and you as the user have no choice in that. I do think that it could be better for singular uses like gaming and video watching.

I don't think it's a bad thing at all, it being the same (more or less). As the polar opposite of a Apple fanboy, I tend to dislike anything from them. Having said that, I think it's a good decision to have done that, rather than shoehorn a desktop interface into a tablet (not to mention being compatible with the entire existing App Store). I think it's a great product, I only wish I could get something just as good with Google or Windows behind it. I have my fingers crossed for the MSI tablet being decent (or the HP one). I've been wanting to get an e-book reader, but have almost no interest in any of the current e-ink types.

"I think it's a great product, I only wish I could get something just as good with Google or Windows behind it."

I don't think you'll get this same class of a device made by another company (or at least not very soon). Apple controls the hardware and software, and they do a damn good job of it. A few features missing here and there, but the interface just looks soo responsive and stable. The device is also rather sleek...

Just my opinion.

I fully agree. I don't understand all the statements, "I will be vastly disappointed if this is like a big ipod touch"

I WOULD LOVE A BIG IPOD TOUCH!

I currently have an iphone and I use it while I am in bed, on the couch, or killing a few moments of time while out and about. I can get really comfortable and surf and play games. Yet, the downfall is the screen size.

Heck, a big iphone like device is prefect! I don't understand the backlash.

Anyway, it will sell millions to people like me. I was in the market for an e-reader anyway.

Agree with this use case. There are quite a few website where browsing on the iPhone is not an enjoyable experience (many web forums for example). An iPad would allow me to do this sort of browsing and small amount of text editing whilst being anywhere in the house with a much better experience than a netbook.

What's wrong with the device?

It simply doesn't do enough. Lacks the flexible utility of a netbook, and it costs more than a netbook to boot. The form factor isn't my complaint. It's that it doesn't do enough to justify setting down my AT&T Fuze to hold the device.

It's a great portable e-commerce device. though Now I can buy books, movies, music, games without a keyboard from Apple.
