So long, Steve.
I know we all felt like this day would come too soon, and it has. Even though it seemed somehow uncertain -- or in a way grimly certain -- what would become of Steve, there's nothing that can shake the feeling: indescribable, and like like having your wind knocked out.
I don't have much to say, I'm not sure anyone really can use words to really grapple this kind of thing. It's impossible. Maybe the best I can do is to point to these two pieces about Steve I wrote earlier this year. I've come to realize over time that they more or less sum up my feelings about Steve as a visionary, as a human, and, at least for me, crystalize the slice of time in which I was lucky enough to intersect with him:

As a cancer survivor, I always remain hopeful that others plagued by this horrible disease will also survive. I am extremely saddened by the news of Steve Jobs' passing, a death whose impact on the world of technology will be immeasurable. Truly one of the greatest, if not the greatest technology visionary or our generation.

Not too many public figures in this century have changed the ways that we do everyday tasks like Steve Jobs has. That is probably why when I received the push notification on my Apple iPhone 4 from AP News that my chest felt heavy and eyes felt watery. When my wife called to verify his passing, my voice spoke with a crack. Weird, I know because I didn't know the guy, but it's just one of this things. He will be forever missed as he was truly one of Earth's leading visionaries. I will miss his talks, his candor and confidence. Now go revolutionize the other side for us.
From Apple PR. Probably the shortest -- and definitely the most heart-wrenching -- release I've ever seen. I know it sounds weird, but somehow I think this is probably how Steve would have wanted this kind of thing handled.

I've always had a connection to Apple products in one form or another throughout my life, and they have definitely changed it for the better.

Kinda at a loss for words. I mean the world has lost a true visionary. One of a kind. RIP Steve Jobs. My thoughts are with you and your family.
When I got my PowerBook G4 in high school, it really inspired me to pursue a software development career over aviation (and BOY was that a good decision). It's a sad day for all, but he built a great company. He also put some great people in his place, and I have complete faith in Apple's ability to continue without him.
Even though I never met Steve, I feel like I lost a friend or family member. I suppose the reason is because his principles, his talents, and the clear pursuit of perfection witnessed in his products provided a mentorship for my entire career and life. Everything I pursue when building something new, is measured against the Steve Jobs benchmark for quality, care and dedication to the best possible experience. Apple technology, in turn, has empowered me to be a better and more productive product leader; so I owe my career - and a large measure of personal success - to how easy Apple products have made it for me to create compelling, attractive and admired content. We'll miss you Steve. Long live your spirit at Apple and beyond!

Wow, I think a lot of people have been expecting this since it was announced that he was stepping down from the CEO role. But to actually read the news, see it on CNN, USA Today and BBC’s home page it just drives home that something changed in the tech world today and I am saddened by it.

Steve was a visionary who changed the very fabric of the way we experience life and an inspiration for much, if not all, of the technology community and business world. The loss of his passion for life and innovation leaves us poorer, but should motivate us to reach for the next big thing and then the one after that.

If the man can help make gadgets that converted me, a 20 year Windows veteran into what some would now call an Apple Fanboy, then I would say that's pretty damned amazing. For years I hated apple and it's products because they just couldn't compete on price and speed with a Windows machine I could build. And yes I can still build a machine that will be far superior to the iMac I use on my desktop today. But the fact is, it's more a piece of art on my desk that just happens to be a great computer. Rest in Peace Mr. Jobs, you will be missed.

Some people love him and some people hate him but you can never deny that Steve Jobs changed the world. Not many people on this earth can say that. He was a visionary and I for one will greatly miss him not just for what he's done but for what he could have done for us all in the future. Rest in peace.

I'm honestly heartbroken. This is absolutely devastating. Steve retiring didn't mean much. He was and always will be, Apple.

Although I, like many persons in the world, didn't know Mr. Jobs on a personal level, I, like many persons in the world, must still admit that he was a reason - probably the reason - that the way we interact with technology is so ubiquitous in this day and age. Whether or not you're a so-called fanboy, you will probably acknowledge that the knowledge and insight that he passed on to influence what you communicate with, what you entertain yourself with, even what you watch on the big screen with your family, would never have been at the place it is today.
