Sling, LocationFree, Hava - the best?
Anyone with a Slingbox, LocationFree, and a Hava device with an opinion on the pros and cons of them? I like that the LocationFree has high local data rates, but it always has a haze over the video regardless of the data rate. The slingbox is super easy to use with a better picture, but the interface is still a little clunky and not as elegant as the LocationFree front end.
I have a LocationFree box, and it's just gathering dust in my closet. I got it back in 2007, and it was a pain to try and get setup because, like a lot of people, my TV and router were in separate rooms. I even called up Sony Tech Support and they weren't even able to help me out much. The LocationFree box has go to be the single worst purchase I have ever made. Fortunately, these days we have Hulu and other forms of internet TV, so devices like LocationFree and Slingbox are, in my opinion, useless.
These devices are becoming more and more obsolete, but they aren't done yet. I still use the slingbox at my parents house to watch local sports from a different city. They're still the only way to broadcast LIVE tv to your pc, laptop, or psp. Hulu is awesome, but sometimes you just want to watch tv, or watch something on your work pc and have complete control over the content. I don't want to just be able to watch whatever Fox or CBS, NBC has "on the menu". I have the LocationFree hooked up right next to the HDHomerun and 3 NAS's and it still performs great. I thought the setup was a dream. I put cable tv going into it, hooked it up to the lan via ethernet, and register the devices with it. No sweat. I still like the viewing software better than the slingplayer in a lot of ways. Its not better but for $30 I couldn't be happier....
Live TV on the PSP is the sweetest thing ever and guarantees I never have to leave a program when I have to leave the room....
Have Sling boxes and Location free. Never tried Hava.
Haze over the video with Location Free? Never noticed a difference or attributed the difference to the Location Free.
May I have noticed a difference between the B10 and the B30. Do you notice that haze on all devices you play it on?
I am tempted to look at the Hava.
Location Free has more pros for me than Slingbox. Here is the first one that trumps and the others. LF players can be bought on Ebay form $30 to $80 from people in the same position as ARUN985. ARUN985 Google your ISP and Location Free to find out methods to set it up. Same thing with Slingbox. It ALL depends on your ISP and home setup. It might take you a lot of time but it is all learning time. It's like buying a video game and the goal is to set it up and have it working! It is worth it. But I digress, the other pro for LF is that you can program your own ir remote. I hook these up to Security Digital Video Recorders so this is important to me but my need is rare.
Slingbox biggest pro is playability. Slingbox can play on almost anything. You can play it from a browser now.
More people use Slingbox so Finding help for your ISP and router is easier.
There are some finer details but your eyes are probably glossing over already.

One more big pro for the Slingbox, any device can access more than one slingbox. There is a directory kept on the Slingbox servers of all the slingboxes you connect to. This lets you sign in with a new device and connect immediately to any of the Slingboxes you have previously setup in your directory. In this respect Location Free is much more difficult bordering on impossible. Sony seems to keep usefulness on a short leash. If you can make their product more useful they want more money.
A PSP can only be setup to access one particular Location Free box at a time! Why the restriction?
The Location free player on the PC or Mac can access multiple Location Free Boxes.
I would like to know how to access multiple LF Boxes from one PSP.
If anyone knows a way to do this please leave a message.

How do you feel about the SlingCatcher? I was thinking of getting one but I don't know anymore... I was going to use it for seeing a sports team from another city, but now I'm thinking of just getting the NBA league pass instead... Do you ever use the slingprojector functionality?
From what I have read about the Hava, its weak points are its limited connections and shoddy build quality. And considering all that, they are still pretty expensive. The Hava and the LocationFree boxes are the only ones that support wireless also, although I would hardwire these anyway or use Sling's powerline option for more stability....
