Similar Tablet Designs

There's a New York Times blog post about how the design of the original Kindle was based on the Blackberry. The author then goes on to point out how the new Kindle Fire appears to be based on the design of the iPad.

Is it just me, or is it impossible to avoid basing a tablet device on the iPad. It's just a screen. With a border. What other options are there? (Except for a triangle shaped tablet, of course)

It's true that there's not much more you can do other than tweak the overall thickness of the device and the radius of the rounded corners. I could understand why they all use thick black bezels – so your fingers don't get in the way of the OS while you're holding the device – but it would be cool if someone made the screen go all the way to the edges and emulated the bezel instead, so that if you're watching a movie it would lose the artificial bezel and fill the entire device.

Also, how about some more colors other than black, white, and silver?

For the most part I'm with you. But you can have any number of buttons on the thing. You can also choose not to have the glass go from edge to edge. You can have a curved surface like the Nexus S. So I do see there can be some differences. But I would question why anyone would want to make design decisions like these.

Ummmm... iPad? It seems to me that any tablet would be based on the design of everything that came even before the iPad, like notebooks, PDAs, and even Fred Flinstone's stone slabs. So, the only real choices boil down to... will we make it proper dimensions for the Golden Ratio or will we use 16:9 for movie watching? Buttons or no buttons? Fat bezel for fat fingers or skinny bezel for non-Americans? Beyond that, it's all just semantics.
