Rom update available in Denmark

From here: www.slashgear.com/htc-hero-updated-firmware-arrive...

But only Denmark so far, I'm tempted to have a go with the update, but like the article says "it’s unclear what would happen on a non-Nordic handset or, indeed, on one supplied by a carrier".

I don't suppose anyone else has tried it out yet?

Installed the update and wow, I didn't really notice all that much laggyness before but jeeze, my Hero is blazing fast now. Well worth the update.

Now, I'm not promoting this, but I rooted my phone at the same time and updated using the MoDaCo custom rom. There was an extra couple tweak's I liked the sound of, and a newer radio rom.

I found it really easy, though of course, your mileage might vary. Guide here for anyone interested: android.modaco.com/content/htc-hero-hero-modaco-co...

when you update, do you loose all your settings, contacts, data and installed applications?

Yes, you lose all data not store on the SD card.

Being lazy.... is there a way to easily back up apps/sms's etc?

Well, ASTRO file manager (get it from Market) can backup your apps to the SD card (just the install packages, not settings) - but if you reinstall them all from the SD card you won't get updated through the Market - I did backup my apps using ASTRO, but ended up also reinstalling all my apps through the Market just to get the update functionality.

I'm not sure about SMS messages though - since I'm still waiting for my old phone number to be transferred to my new carrier I haven't used the phone and texting parts of the Hero much yet, and therefore didn't have any messages to backup :). But I would imagine there is some way to do it.

apparently there is this application called MyBackup which does just that for the settings etc. Still, application reinstall is necessary.

I really can't wait to get the update for my Unlocked UK version of the Hero. Lag is the only thing keeping it from being almost perfect...

Phandroid has a link to xda-developers who have created an update that's supposed to work on non-Nordic phones

No idea how safe it is to use this.

I tried to download the update utility via HTC Danish Site www.htc.com/dk/SupportDownload.aspx?p_id=283&c..., however won't accept my serial number.

Can someone send me the direct link?

I live in Denmark and have updated the ROM on my Hero. I didn't have a lot of trouble with lag before updating, so I haven't noticed that much of a change, but I do feel that the transition between the home srceens feel snappier.

My biggest gripe with HTC's ROM updates are that they are provided as an exe. which is not very useful on my Mac. Adding to the "insult" the updater doesn't support Windows 7 meaning that I had to install an Windows XP instance in VMWare Fusion, just to update my Hero's ROM...
That's not so cool HTC.

I'm in Denmark as well and installed the ROM from Windows 7 with no problems (Sucks that there's no Mac support though).

Even though the lag wasn't too bad before the update, it was definitely noticeable and very annoying for me. With the new ROM everything is buttery smooth and I'm a lot happier with the phone now.
