Remember when Apple used to charge for the OS updates for the iPod Touch?

I almost forgot that Apple charged $15 (or was it $20?) for OS updates for the Touches. Seemed really lame at the time, but even more so now that we expect these type of updates are expected to be free.

At what point did this change anyways?

Also, you know, what's $10 when the customer is going to spend hundreds on apps and music anyway?

I thought it was $9.99.

But yeah, I paid for it. It changed after iOS 3.

iOS 2.0 and 3.0 for iPod touches were $9.95.

woah, they stopped charging for iOS updates? That's pretty sweet but should've been free in the first place.

From what I read apparently they were legally required to charge for iPod touch updates because of cell phone contracts, where the updates were included as part of the service. The argument was that iPhone users were paying for their upgrades by subscribing to AT&T, so they had to charge non-AT&T customers a fee to be fair.

The change occurred with iOS 4 for users of 2nd gen and up iPod Touches. The reason for the changes are detailed in this Ars Technica article from 2009:
