Reduce the jet engine fan noise

Any one have tips on quieting down your Xbox 360? I have an older one from the initial launch; I hear the new ones are a lot quieter.

If you have or can get a 120gb hard drive, install the game to the hard drive most of the noise in my case comes from the disc spinning. Also if you don't mind what your xbox looks like you can pull the faceplate off and i have found it helps prevent RROD and cools the box quicker. My year old xbox and 2 year old xbox haven't got the RROD since i pulled the face plate and the two year old one was on the verge.

Thanks for the advice.

I've installed the games to the HD, definitely does cut down on the noise, but it's still pretty loud. I'll give that faceplate thing a try!

my elite is anything but, it refuses to play W@W from disc as i get the overheat error and it shuts down, the fans sound like it's a jet taking off and it seems nothing helps. thanks for the faceplate tip im gonna go try that:)

Replace the fan with a Nidec one, the one with a black sticker on the back of the fans. You can buy these from Ebay. The combination of replacing the fan and installing games onto the hard drive has greatly reduced the noise from my launch Xbox 360.

Not sure I'd want to void my warranty to quiet it down (especially after one RROD already).

Hm...I think I'll just use my noise canceling headphones and just sit real close to the TV....

I've had a Premium and now I have an Elite, and I haven't had any problems with either of them. The only noise I get is from the disc drive, and that isn't even much.

We hated the jet engine we tried the XCM cooler with add on fan: www.xcm.cc/xcm_360_high_speed_air_cooler.htm

Helped some but the best was:

that was the solution that works the best

After my third rrod recently I bit the bullet and got a jasper arcade model. The in-game fan and disc noise is much, much improved, the thing that annoys me is the idle fan sound, even when watching a dvd there's a constant whiiiiiine...

The noise depends on how you've setup your entertainment room.

I sit ten feet away from my 40" hdtv with a surround sound system. While I don't notice sound coming from the 360 when playing with the games installed to the hard drive, I doubt I'd notice the 360 spinning the DVD at full speed with my setup.

I wouldn't open the box and install new fans if you want to keep that three year RRoD warranty. If you break the sticker behind the face plate, you're on your own.

I can't help, but I can tell you not to waste your time with the whisper fan, it didn't help at all. What I ended up doing was moving it into a nearby closet where no one could hear it. I used a long HDMI cable from monoprice.com and an IR repeater since I also use it for Media Center.

I've found that the disc drive is the cause of 90% of the noise of the 360. I use mine as my DVD player, but I have the HD-DVD add on that I use to watch DVD's. That add-on is almost silent, and really cuts down on the noise from the console. video playback doesn't tax the GPU too much so the fans don't have to spin as loud, and the 360 is actually very quiet during video for me. I try to play games of the hard drive, but since I only have a 20GB drive I can only install one game at a time, but that generally does help. the fans spin up more since the GPU is working hard, but again, the disc drive really is where most of the noise comes from.

I run my games from the built in hard disk, makes a huge difference. I also turn the TV volume up which drowns out the noise of the 360. Running it through the amp helps drown the noise too but it annoys the neighbors. COD5 in Dolby Digital is quite splendid.

If you have a Xbox 360 with a 60GB hard drive or more I strongly recommend that you run the games off your hard drive. This reduces a lot of the noise, in fact it's almost as quiet as my PS3. Other than that there really isn't much you can do, or should do. The only way I compensate is just putting on my over the ear headphones and zoning out the noise of the fan.

A cheap 120gb drive off of eBay for game installs is pretty much the only legal option. For drowning it out, a nice surround sound system will do the trick as well. :)

It's funny how turning up the volume on the TV is the best remedy for this...why can't Microsoft make a quiet machine!

I think the next big fix would be jamming spoons into your ears.

Hey don't knock it till you've tried it, not that i;ve jammed spoons in my ears but hey there is always a first. Well maybe not for me but i guess i just sit far enough away and am used to it that i don't even notice it, hell my refrigerator is louder then it.

Ultimately I would want a better machine from Microsoft. Each version is getting cooler and quieter and the disc ripping was a great idea/option. Until then, crank it to 11!
