Personal Document Archiving & Syncing

Did you guys notice that Amazon now supports archiving of the personal documents you send to your Kindle through your @kindle.com email? You have 5GB of cloud storage and it seems that you'll be able to recover personal archived content that you delete from your device, although for now this is not supported on the Kindle "3" (but people with the still unreleased firmware 3.3 claimed to have that working).

According to the Amazon pages, syncing page numbers and highlights (whispersync) from personal content will also be supported, at least on the Kindle "4". Here is hope that that will also be supported under Kindle 3 with the upcoming 3.3 firmware.

The supported document types are:
  • Microsoft Word (.DOC, .DOCX)
  • HTML (.HTML, .HTM)
  • RTF (.RTF)
  • JPEG (.JPEG, .JPG)
  • Kindle Format (.MOBI, .AZW)
  • GIF (.GIF)
  • PNG (.PNG)
  • BMP (.BMP)
  • PDF (.PDF); is supported in our experimental category.
In practical terms, we are really talking about Microsoft Word and PDF when it comes to commonly used document types. Each has to be converted to the Kindle Format, and the results will hopefully be better than is currently possible with Kindle Direct Publishing.

KDP is a fail if your Word document uses anything more than basic formatting; WordPad's capabilities better reflect KDP's supported feature set than does Word. KDP is that basic. Since the disclaimers are so similar for the Kindle Personal Document Service, it is likely that Amazon is using the same document conversion engine as KDP. I hope I am wrong, but expectations should be modest at this point.

For those familiar with Instapaper, I think it is closer to the spirit of what Amazon is offering; and I find Instapaper super useful on iOS. Thus, the Kindle Personal Document Service should be useful for many users; and Amazon deserves praise for bringing this functionality to the Kindle.

I usually buy ebooks in ePub format and convert them to .mobi with Calibre. I used to copy them to the Kindle via USB, but if my personal documents will be kept in sync between devices (and hopefully the iPhone, iPad and desktop Kindle apps in the future as well) I'll gladly do it via the @kindle.com email.
