Palm Pixi Announcement Timing

I'm suitably impressed by the device (except for the no-wifi part), but what the hell is up with the timing? If I recall, the Pre was released the day before WWDC kicked off in June, so Palm held headlines for one day before being completely swamped by news of the new iPhone in most mainstream outlets.

And here we are again; the Pixi is going to be hot news for today, but will be dominated tomorrow by the impending iPod event. I couldn't think of a worse time to make this device official. Do Palm hate publicity or something?

You're right, it's weird. They announce things the day before Apple does, and then they just get overshadowed by whatever Apple unveils. Not very good timing!

i think Palm thinks it has more power than it does, like somehow their gadgets will lessen the impact of apple products released the next day.

I don't know if I agree with that. If they thought like that then they would have made the embargo time around 10/11am EST, they just let it out at midnight instead. Seems like they don't want TOO much hype right now, not sure why though...

I actually think it WASN'T an unwise decision to announce the Pixi the same day as Apple released their iPod updates. The way I see it is that Palm won't be shipping this phone for a few months, so they really don't need to hype it too hard just yet considering they will get swept under the rug by Zune HD next week and iPods this week. So what did they do? They just slip it out at midnight and let it ride. Once the holidays roll around I think we will see a very different attitude from Palm toward hyping this thing. (Or at least I hope so).

Couldn't they have waited it out for another couple of weeks to get past the other major announcements? I mean, obviously they weren't shooting to have a conference to announce the device, but it seems like waiting could have helped since the phone won't be out for a couple months.

Then again, maybe it's all a wash in the end when you're announcing something that isn't available immediately.

If not for the show Engadget would have banished this device from there front page already.
