Opinions on Moblin OS/other netbook OSes?

I have an Eee PC 1000H running Ubuntu 9.04 Netbook Remix right now, but it's VERY laggy on the special "netbook" interface, and I just don't like the normal desktop on such a small screen. So, I've been looking into other options.

I'm a standard teenage consumer who does very little work with her computer. I use my netbook as a back-up computer at home and as my main computer while on vacations (I don't leave for more than 3 weeks at a time). I aim to simple Stumble (www.stumbleupon.com), instant message, and use Facebook (especially to upload pictures). I've been following the development of the Moblin OS, and it looks like a great alternative to Ubuntu, with a more stylish interface. But, I am hesitant to go through the effort of procuring a copy and testing it out before hearing first-hand opinions about the system.

Does anyone who has used this OS think it might be a good match for me, or know of one that might be?

Hey, I use Windows 7 and it runs very smoothly. You should do the same. It does a very good job managing media. Also, Linux doesn't get as good battery life as Windows because it does a worse job at managing power. You should get the free download before Microsoft takes it down in August.

Windows of any kind is not really an option for me.

I've used Moblin on my Dell Mini 9 and the biggest problem you may have is if wifi doesn't work out of the box. I'm sure there are good directions on how to get it running under Moblin, but it may take a bit of work. If you're up to it, I say give it a try on a USB flash drive. If you don't like it, you haven't touched the hard drive in your netbook, so no harm done.

I use LinuxMint, which is an Ubuntu derivative, but I use a modified LXDE window manager that I think is a bit better and RAM usage and on space for the small screen than the regular Ubuntu desktop. You may want to check out Mint's Fluxbox distro, or CrunchEEE (the CrunchBang Linux derivative that is tailored to the EEE PC).

I use it with the XP that came with it and have no complaints. It handles a surprising amount of stuff. I had a huge download going, many apps loaded and it still played youtube videos, full screen, without skipping a beat.

However, I'm a Linux person whenever possible but I don't want to screw up the nice battery life on this thing if the Linux power manager isn't as good as the Windows one. I'll opt for a virtual machine or CoLinux for now.

I'm having trouble installing VMWARE on it, but I think it's a VMWARE SERVER 2 problem as other people are having similar issues on other computers. I might just slap on CoLinux which gives you a native Linux OS within Windows without actually running a VM.

I've used Moblin and functionality-wise, it is a great OS for netbooks. Moblin is mainly designed for internet use, and it shows throughout the entire OS. I really like how it organizes everything, such as media / office files / programs so that they are all easily and intuitively accessible. What makes it even better is that anything you'd need to use on your netbook is integrated into the Moblin OS, meaing you don't have to waste time installing programs. Just start up your netbook and go. If you're the type that does most of her work on the internet and wants things to just work, then Moblin is netbook OS for you.
