So after a year on Windows Phone 7.5 I've decided to return to Android but I'm not sure which phone to get. I know the S3 is the top of the line phone right now but getting it would involve extending my Tmobile contract. I saw that google recently dropped the price of the Galaxy Nexus to $350 which is quite an attractive no contract price.
Which should I go for? The most important thing for me is battery life with performance a close second.
Outside of the 1GB of RAM i don't see much of a difference between the two. Help?

I am seriously considering buying it once the temporary court injunction against barring the sale of it in the U.S. is lifted. My thought is that you will be much happier going withtheGalaxy Nexus on a prepaid plan. You'll save a ton of money and have more options than if you sign a contract for the carrier subsidized SG3. The Nexus phone will hold it's value too. I understand that the Galaxy Nexus has good battery life, and the stock Android experience on the Nexus is fast, especially when it gets the newest Android release of 4.1. You have the option of an extended battery if you find the stock battery won't satisfy your needs. Hope that helps.

Well since it seems that you can't get the Nexus any more on the play store at it seems to be "coming soon" (Thanks apple). i would say if you can't wait the S3 is a really nice device.
Personally i would go GSM Nexus for $ 350. it will be pure Google no carrier or manufacturer bloatware to worry about.

Apple got their asses handed to them already in California. It's looking like the patent will be invalided since it happened in the UK. The ban is already lifted. If it isn't back on the Play Store at this moment, it will be soon. And I agree. The GSM Gnex is a better choice, if only for the immediate updates. I'm actually considering taking the hit and ditching my Verizon Gnex to get one.
I installed one of the ROMs that were out there for a stock version of Jelly Bean on my Verizon GN. Best thing i ever did to that phone. I thought about switching to the GSM version but i don't want to give up my "unlimited" data until i have to.
I went the Galaxy Nexus route for myself and my wife, and we are on the $30/mo prepaid plan from T-Mobile. I absolute love the pure Android experience, and I'm quite impressed with Jelly Bean so far.
As nice as the S3 is, I just can't see going back to a carrier/mfg locked phone. Everything simply works, and works well on the Nexus.

I think its really a team effort between the carriers and manufacturers of the devices that lock them down in the old versions of the OS.
As for the S3 i really like that phone but i was not impressed with the Samsung skin but i do like some of their tweaks.
i will give Apple credit about that. they are able make sure their phones stay at the latest version of the OS. I admit that for the newer hardware.

Well I took the Nexus plunge and received my unit yesterday.
So far I'm in love with the screen and speed. Not so in love with the battery life (down to 50% after an hour of use!?!?!) but that may have been due to not really charging the battery.
I'm thinking about getting an extended battery with NFC. Any recommendation on those?

Honestly? I'd wait. Android does a strange battery-stats thing on the sdcard and it can take it a few days to a week to figure out what's up. My favorite example of this being over new years in times square my phone was at 1 percent for about 8 hours while I was snapping pictures before I noticed. Chances are your battery isn't as bad as you think. Also, check your software version and make sure you have the 4.0.4 update minimum. From 4.0.3 to 4.0.4 the battery life went up dramatically. Definitely get the jellybean update if you haven't yet. If you plan to root, I recommend the "jellybelly" roms.

First thing that happened after I set the phone up was a notification that 4.1.1 was available. I installed that right away.
I guess I'll just wait to see if the battery life improves. I did turn off NFC, dimmed the screen pretty much all the way and turned on Wi-FI to see if it does anything to the battery..

That's beyond weird. To put it in perspective, I'm running essentially stock JB + root, I'm not doing anything strange like running any task killers or whatnot, and I can use my phone hardcore all day pretending it's a laptop replacement and still have 20-30 percent left when I get home from work. If it just sits in my pocket all day because I'm stuck in meetings I'll have 80 percent left when I get home. Typical day, my phone goes on the charger when I got to bed and that's all the charging it gets. That's with GPS, WIFI, NFC, 4G on all time, and automatic brightness. It USED to be suck before 4.0.4. I saw my battery life essentially stay the same from 4.0.4 to JB.
