Older brand new phone or more current used phone?

I'm thinking about buying a phone off contract but I'm not sure whether I should get an older phone in brand new condition (Amazon) or a more current phone in used condition (Craigslist, Swappa).

Buying a brand new phone would greatly reduce worries about defects and physical condition of the hardware but I would only be able to buy an older gen device (Nexus One vs Nexus S) to be at the same budget.

Buying a used phone has its risks but then having the more current phone means it would last longer.

For reference, here's a new Nexus One with warranty on Amazon for $260 - www.amazon.com/Google-Nexus-One-Unlocked-Android/d...

Are you going to buy a new primary phone? On Twitter, you said "another" which made me think that you're going to use this phone as a secondary phone.

If this is going to be your primary phone I suggest you get a new used phone so that it'll last you some time.

If this is going to be your secondary phone, I suggest getting a new older phone so that you know it'll work when you know it'll work when you need to use the phone.

On a really unrelated side note, I think it'd be really cool and useful if gdgt had a marketplace feature. I'd trust a geeky social network more when it comes to buying gadgets than eBay, Facebook, or Craigslist (assuming gdgt has a secure checkout procedure).

Yes this will be my new primary phone (I just sold my iPhone 3G which was my primary for the longest time).

I don't think that's unrelated at all actually. You have to admit a lot of gdgt's features are "forum-like" and most forums have a marketplace. Since gdgt now has a reputation counter, this would work quite well but I don't think they are too interested in it as of now...

Oh ya, then I'd definitely get a new used phone. Especially since an new older phone will either slow down with future upgrades or it won't be eligible at all for a future upgrade. You just never know.

Ya, that idea has been on my mind for at least a couple months now and hopefully gdgt will grow and develop enough to have that feature haha.

I'd rather have a current used phone since it's probably more future proof than an older brand new phone. There's nothing more aggravating than having a device that is feeling sluggish after a year or so after buying it.

If you know anyone on a Sprint business account, maybe you can work out a deal with them. On our business account, I can walk into the store anytime I want and pay the lowest listed price (i.e. the one they charge new customers) for any phone at any time. Since it is a business account, there are no individual contracts. So, find someone with just such a setup, but their phone from them so they can upgrade (even if they have only had it for a few months) since it won't cost them anything beyond what you pay them for the old one.

However, if this policy has changed in the last year since I bought my EVO, then disregard everything I just said and only buy a used phone from someone you really trust.

Well actually I'm on T-Mobile ... but I am willing to get an AT&T phone and use it on 2G if need be. I did it with my iPhone ....

Oh, you mentioned the Nexus S above, so I just assumed you were willing to consider a switch. I'm in the same boat as you because I would like to get my wife, who is on T-Mobile, and Android phone with a keyboard because her Optimus T is hard to type on. I was actually planning to stop by my local store and ask the sales people, who know me since I stop in every few months to play with the new phones, to keep an eye out for someone upgrading from a MyTouch 3G Slide or G2 and send them my way if they'd be interested in selling it. Then I could Gazelle the Optimus T. Maybe if you have any geeks working at a local T-Mobile you could try to buy their phone from them?

Personally I'd go for new Nexus One, but it's just because I love the phone!

I like it a lot too but how long do you think it will last? I need this phone to last 2-3 years...
