Nostalgia time!

This was my first "16bit" console and man did I love it. It had some of the best games of the era and I wish I had kept mine. Alien Crush and Parasol Stars probably got more play than a large percentage of the other games I've owned over the years.

I can still remember renting Military Madness and staying up straight through the night playing against a friend. I remember when I finally got the CD attachment and popped in Y's for the first time. My jaw was hanging to the floor because it was the first time I'd ever seen anime with real voice acting in a game. Too bad the cut scenes were so much better than the actual game! :D I also remember ROFLing at the voice acting in Last Alert. Then there was Gen's "Go to heaven" whenever he beat you in Fighting Street... worth losing just to hear it and laugh.

To this day, I revere no other RPG the way I did Cosmic Fantasy 2. One of the best stories I've seen in a game, with great cut scenes... it was the first game that made me get "Watery Eye Syndrome".

I am so glad to see some of these making it onto the Virtual Console so other gamers can experience them as well. Now if they'd hurry up and release Parasol Stars! :)

I never had one of these but my best friend did. I spent as much time as I could over there playing Blazing Lazers, Splatterhouse and a few different Bonk's. He had a a ton of games and I was always extremely envious. This is easily my favorite retro console.

compared to the older systems I grew up with, this system really had games that would "pop" with color!

what are your top five cartridge and cd games? I always wanted to play with those cd based games...

Top 5 HuCards (favorites, not necessarily best games from the system):
1. Parasol Stars - yes, I know, this may sound hokey, but it was just so darn fun with 2 players!
2. Alien Crush - no matter how many hours straight I played it, it just never got old
3. Bomberman '93 - had never played this until Wii Virtual Console, but man do we get a lot of play out of it now! May pick up '94 while my family is all together for Christmas.
4. Ninja Spirit - this game was just plain cool, with some huge bosses
5. Dungeon Explorer - yes it could be painfully annoying at times, but it was so cool for its era

Before you ask... NO to Bonk... I had it but got easily annoyed with it. Bought it on Virtual Console on a whim of nostalgia and quickly was reminded why I should have picked something else. :/ And NO to Splatterhouse... there was nothing truly great about it once you got past the gimmick.

Top 5 CDs:
1. Cosmic Fantasy 2
2. Exile - even though the gameplay was a little weak, the story was really interesting with good cut scenes
3. Fighting Street - this was actually terrible, but it was still fun to see where it all started since I got my fighting game start with Street Fighter II
4. Y's III - tolerated the gameplay for the cut scenes, but the music could be good at times
5. Y's I & II - never finished the second one... it was just too annoying... this was my "show-off" game until CF2 came along, though

I always wanted Record of Lodoss War but never got to play it. :( I'm sure it was better than my #2 - 5 CDs. For me, the CD extension was really just part of the cost of CF2 and Exile, since none of the other games I had on the CD were very great. CF2 was worth the extra $150 I paid (on clearance) for the CD extension, though. I used to pull the CD unit out of its cradle and carry it with me to the computer lab when I would work so I could have some "portable" tunes while monitoring / programming. :D Of course, the portable is in quotes there since I still needed a power brick. I really wish I had recorded a complete playthrough of CF2 so I could go back and watch the story now. Oh well. I would happily pay full price to have that game again as long as the cut scenes were all intact.

Hmm...

CD Games...(That I owned)

1. YS Book I & II - I don't know why I love this game so much, I still have the original CD stashed somewhere. I know it is extremely simplistic and can be repetitive, but the story kept me in.
2. Cosmic Fantasy II - As stated earlier...awesome story...Longest boss battle up to this point for me.
3. Exile- Pretty nice graphics for the time, also had an old school Disney "E-ticket" reference in a cut scene.
4. JB Harold Murder Club - I never finished this one, but I dug the music.
5. Vasteel - If I remember correctly, this was a strategy game kinda like military madness.

HU-Card Games.

1. Street Fighter II (Japanese Version..I had a turbo duo that could play this)
2. Splatterhouse - I was young and thought that this was just plain cool.
3. Legendary Axe II
4. China Warrior ( In retrospect, this is a terrible game...but I played it constantly)
5. Keith Courage in alpha zones. - This came with my original system.

I still remember the first time I saw Bonk's Adventure...I thought graphics could never get any better (I was young...) It was pretty cool that you could play the regular games on their handheld, the TurboExpress (name?). I've got to see if mine still works, I could see the wife enjoying Devils Crush.

I always wanted that... and still wouldn't mind having one. A friend of mine had to decide between that and the Atari Lynx... I told him to get the Turbo but he foolishly chose the Lynx. The Lynx... what a waste.
