Noise from Drobo

Has anyone noticed that the Drobo is on the noisy side?

Nope, had mine for about 2 months and nothing, but I've been rotating drives out like crazy doing expansion. You think it's the actual Drobo or a drive?

I've had the usb-only one for about a year & got the new one recently. It's attached to a PC (with 5 drives) that I use as a media server. The DROBO, PC& the backup power box combined are pretty noisy. Also, having to re-boot the PC & reconnect the DROBO every few days is a pain. I keep everything in the closet & the closet door closed. Haven't had the need/chance to use the new DROBO yet. I'm also thinking about connecting a DROBO to a mac mini which should have a lower noise & reboot count.

What has 5 drives? Certainly not a Drobo (unless it's a DroboPro). If it's your PC, irrelevant to the discussion.

I have 4 DroboPros stacked on top of each other with 32 1TB drives between them. Is that relevant? BTW Their fairly quiet.

To the original question, it's likely your drives. Power it down and remove the drives. Then power it up. If you still hear the noise. I'm wrong.

If I take the drives out of my drobo and power it back on would that cause data loss? Also if there is no drive in my Drobo how could it heat up and thus kick in the fan to see if the fan is causing the rattling sound. (Not the normal HDD is failing sounds) Thank you for the help.

1. How would you lose data on your drives if they are NOT in your Drobo, unplugged from anything?
1a. Take them all out, put them all back in. You will not lose any data.

2. If heat from the drive is making the fan in the Drobo loud... the Drobo is making the noise! Dust the fan and put the drives back in.

3. I have 5 DroboPros with 40 2TB drives between them. Is that relevant?
3a. No, it is not.
