Nexus 7 score...just a bit low.

I was very excited to see the Nexus 7 score go up today as I just picked mine up after placing my 16gb ipad2 for sale on Ebay. I think overall, the critics were far too harsh in regards to features and storage capacity. It's amazing to me that the Nexus 7 did not manage to net a 9 in any category of the critics reviews. I think that the display, features & portability should have at least been 9's.

A 5.7 for the storage capacity is just brutal. My wife has a Nook Tablet with SD card slot and she has yet to use it once. She streams most everything. I myself got the 16gb N7 and while I would have liked an SD card slot, for $250, the tab is so feature packed, I think on the rare occasion when I'm not in wifi range, 16gb is more than enough to store content and media for me.

Overall I'm loving the device and will submit my review soon but I think that while the user reviews might be a little on the high side, I think they better reflect the value of this tablet than the critics scores. Really wished that this device would have at least scored a nine. Never before has a tablet of this quality been sold at this price.

It was a bit lower than I was expecting as well, but I understand it. In terms of HD video, 8 or 16GB simply is not enough. The included copy of transformers clocks in over 1GB i believe (although I may be mistaken)

That isn't to say its a bad tablet. It obviously fits your needs, and fits my needs too. That's all that really matters in the end.

funny that no one mentions the 16 gig problem with ipads though. Sure you can get 32 or 64 gig ipads, but the price on those is significantly higher than the $500 price people like to throw around when they discuss the ipad cost.

I totally agree with you. Even with the ipad 2, the price still is 400$ for the 16GB version. If you compare this with the 250$ for the 16GB Nexus 7, the Nexus 7 score does not look fair.

My ipad2 just sold for $406 on ebay! I could not believe it. I received it as a gift for completing my masters and after using it for only a few weeks, I quickly decided it was not for me. It's a very nice piece, but the Nexus 7 form factor and specs really sold me. Couldn't be happier! A new nexus 7 and a dent in my daughters daycare bill!

WOW! That's a stroke of luck. Just pray it wasn't somebody that thought it was the new ipad that is going to freak out on you. I scored a refurb ipad2 for 150 bucks a few days ago. I'm waiting on it to get here. The iPad definitely isn't the best tablet, but I have a bunch of money in the appstore going to waste if I don't have something to run it on.

NOTE: Also get ready for long wait. The Nexus 7 is sold out everywhere. Google Store is still claiming a week or two for delivery, but a lot of people think that's optimistic. They are selling on eBay for a grand right now because people can't find them. Try calling around your local area and see if you luck out and find one. A friend of mine got his because someone cancelled a pre-order at gamestop.

This guy is saying if you pre-order at walmart, it will ship the 25th.

*Sigh* This is primarily a rah rah Apple site if that wasn't obvious. You'd never know that barely 1 out of 10 people actually own Apple products. Huge reality distortion field. You just have to accept the bias. It's common on tech review sites that don't have technical people. The fact that this is better than the higher rated iPad2 doesn't matter, or that it suffers the exact same "problems". My favorite was dinging it because of the lack of a microsd slot, and postulating how you could possibly get movies on it. Well, how do you do it with an iPad2? Just let it be. Apple is slowly losing markets and annoying everyone. Google/Samsung are destroying them in the markets and the press. Google already won. The blind devotees and followers here will do nothing but talk about how great Google is when they figure out Google is the best, and we'll be sick to death of the Google worship. The same thing happened with Microsoft a while back when they had better marketing than products.

I'm not sure I'd go so far in that direction, sounding just as rah rah Google that way.

I'm perfectly fine knowing that different devices are better for different people. I don't see one better than the other except for how it pertains to me personally.

Declaring anyone a "winner" on anything other than profit is pointless. And even then, who cares? Let's just all use what we like and be done with all of this annoying "mine's better than yours is" nonsense.

I made a separate post about the specific things GDGT definitely got wrong. It's a separate discussion now. Hopefully they see their sad bias and fix it. It's a huge disservice to the people that come here expecting good reviews.

This is why all members of the community can write a user review. Have you done so yet sawilson? I know I will be putting mines on here once I spend a couple days with it (second day with it, and first actually using it)

My review of the product was the first review, and it's the top rated review. I had one the day after I/O.

I totally agree, get what you like, but perception matters in the marketplace and the perception now is that Apple is worth the ridiculous premium they charge on ther (admittedly very solid) products. TV ratings matter, grades matter to a lot of people, There is a reason why Hyundai and Kia didn't start catching up to Toyota and Honda in sales and popularity until their products got better and garnered more favorable reviews. Whether we like it or not, these things matter.

And a quick note: If declaring someone a winner on profit was the yardstick, then Justin Bieber is a better musician than Eric Clapton, and American Idol is a better tv show than Breaking Bad. The Olsen Twins are better actresses than Glenn Close. The Ford F150 is a better vehicle than the Ferrari Italia, etc. Lets just stop making up reasons why something is better than something else to match our worldview. I can remember years of "you can't say something is better because of specs" from apple people, now to hear those same people claim apple products are better because of specs. It's a whole lot of hypocrisy.

I'm not so much concerned with "declaring a winner" as I am concerned with the Nexus 7 going the way of the Zune HD, a great Media player that was better than the ipod touch in almost every way (except apps) and died a premature death due to perception. Great gadgets can fail if they don't reach critical mass. I would hate for the Nexus 7 to be a bright but short footnote in tablet history, because that is what the ipad does to other tablets. It sucks up all the oxygen in the room.

Agreed. People get these cult-like ideas and religious opinions about products. Look at that ridiculous score for a tablet with no ports, vendor lock-in, fragile build, and non expandable storage. It's absolutely ridiculous. 97? Really? I own one. It is not that great.
