New ASUS tablet: 12-inch IPS display, Core i5 CPU, Windows 7?

This thing is going to have a battery life of 45 minutes (I don't think they've actually said the battery life, yet). And all for the low, low price of $1,000 US. Maybe I'm just being a curmudgeon, but I'm feeling like this thing is dead on arrival.

Anyone else?

Looks like Asus says 3.5 hours of battery life. Hmmmm.

For those of us who need to run Win7 on a tablet form factor and want a Wacom digitizer, this is going to the best and only alternative. Yes, the battery life is wanting, but everything else on the spec sheet is solid and the IPS screen is a great bonus. I think the price is very competitive when measured against convertible tablet pcs (I use a thinkpad X60 right now) or the atom/oak trail based slates that are coming out (i.e. Samsung slider). The market for this is not as big as the iPad of course, but there is a real market for this type of product and I am glad Asus is serving it.

Quick addendum: It *is* a sexy looking device, and some on other sites have argued that it could be a good tool for photographers on the go. I'll kind of agree. The raw power and beautiful screen of the device, sound like a dream.

But I bet it weighs a ton and doesn't last very long. It just doesn't seem practical. And has the same problem many other of these tablets have: it's a "mobile" touch screen device running a desktop operating system. It's going to feel kludgy.

i agree, no matter what the price is. sorry, but a full-on Windows laptop is something no one wants OR needs as microsoft proved this YEARS ago. a tablet needs to be convenient, accessible, and efficient. any Windows based tablet is not due to sacrificing battery life for form factor and thus not efficient, the OS is not adapted for tablet use reducing it's accessibility, and the OS's inflexibility making it inconvenient. it does nothing better than a full-on laptop.

as for the artists and designers who'd be interested, i still havent seen any doing serious work while in a cafe as most work from home or the office as it's simply more efficient to work using a full-power machine.

a digitizer with built-in shared or extended desktop display capability is infinitely more useful while paired with a capable workstation. i'd stab myself in the jugular with the stylus if i had to wait on a portable to keep up with my workflow and bursts of creativity... doing that in public would also be pretty inconvenient for those trying to enjoy a latte while i'm bleeding all over the place.

Do you have, or have ever really used a Windows tablet PC? Almost everyone who hates on the Tablet PC has never touched one. I use my tablet in cafes for video editing and 3d design. I will only buy a new tablet with the full windows 7 stack. Anything less is just a toy.

Jason, I'm with you. I'm that guy that needs a tablet that can go with me and get real work done not just read a magazine or watch a crappy You tube. I am a hobby shooter that merges images into panoramas. As a tethered computer it works great with Nikon Camera Control. I have loaded Photoshop and Lightroom wit plenty
of SSD left for incidentals like Plants vs. Zombies.I have about 20 gb left.
Oh yeah I I'm writing this on my EP121!
Love it!

Yep, well it started out 64gb. Formatted to 59.6 gb then loaded with Photoshop 5, Lightroom 3.2, Turbo CAD17, Nikon's Camera Control, Evernote, Chrome. Also the Android SDK tools so I can nooter/side load my NookCOLOR.
All that and I have just over 20 gb left. I don't store images on it as for the most part they go on the SD card.
Hope that helps answer your question.
As for toys, I love Apple, but the only product of theirs I buy comes in capital letters. AAPL.
I just prefer my electronics to be a little more open and usable for how I work.
