Is it true that this device must be connected to a compute and can not setup to be used as network attached storage?
The GigE port is for iSCSI only. It is intended for "direct attach" iSCSI meaning single server, but does support multi-host in some "cluster aware" environments such as VMware.
Sharing out the storage is done via the host just like you would the native drives within a server or any other iSCSI array.
