My iPad 2nd-gen wishlist: a little thinner, way lighter. Really, that's it.

There's been much ado about the next iPad getting front / rear-facing cameras (highly likely), a Retina display (see gdgt.com/discuss/if-ipad-2nd-gen-gets-retina-displ... on why that's not happening), a built-in SD card slot (doubtful), and plenty of other stuff. That stuff would be nice, and I certainly wouldn't mind some more RAM and the usual annual processor upgrade (which are a given anyway). But what I'd REALLY like to see in the next iPad is a reduction in thickness and -- more than anything else -- a big reduction in weight.

Dropping some weight would be terrific... as long as it doesn't come at the expense of battery life. But I think the point of this post is right on; the iPad is a very polished and finished product for something that is first revision.

Honestly, I'd be totally fine with less battery life in the name of a lighter, thinner iPad. I wouldn't mind having to charge my iPad slightly more frequently.

The weight is the only reason I prefer reading on my EVO 4G. The size is great for video and pdfs. The bezel, while necessary to hold the thing without touching the display, doesn't need to be made of the heavy glass. Could be grippy plastic or aluminum. That right there would reduce a lot of weight.

I'd like a GPS receiver in the WiFi only models in order to take advantage of the location apps.

Other than that, it's great as is.

When I activated my iPhone 4 and cell service was cut from my old 3GS, the location accuracy got (surprisingly) much worse with just the GPS alone. Perhaps that lack of cell service is just too much of a hurdle to overcome economically?

Agreed on the weight/thinness. Increasing the pixel density is a must for me, having read a few books on this thing the current pixel density really bothers me. I don't care about it being at the level of "Retina Display" but I just need it to be a lot better.

Thinner and lighter would help make the product a lot better. A pound and a half doesn't sound like much but I just can't hold my iPad up for an extended period of time because of its weight.

I'd really like to see more RAM - it'd help with multitasking and running apps that have larger footprints. I've run into both Reeder and Instapaper crashes when running their in-app browsers. A higher resolution would be also be nice even if retina display - as we currently know it - isn't happening on the iPad quite yet.

From a Archos 70 (300g) owner... I concur the iPad weight has to go down. But the available options for Apple are not legion. Aluminium or glass weight too much while preserving rigidity. Plastic (ala iPhone 3G/3GS) is the only way to go but at the expense of rigidity.

Thinner and lighter for sure. I've been standing on the sidelines, but even casual use of a friend's iPad tells me that I'd find the weight annoying for prolonged reading. I also would definitely want the front-facing camera as it seems odd to have such a device not be FaceTime ready. I'd also like some extra RAM to handle the multi-tasking, and of course the processor upgrade, both of which as you say is a given.

Not sure if Apple will make it lighter, if they can make it lighter and still keep the terrific battery life, that would be a sure winner, physics stands in their way currently.

Hope I am proven wrong next year.
