Discussion about
My approximately 18-month old Slingbox Solo recently stopped working.
Only the power light will illuminate, and no amount of resetting or unplugging / replugging the unit will bring it back. I've looked at the Slingbox support forums, and there are dozens of users with the same issue and no resolution. All have the Solo, and all are about 18-24 months old. Sling has not responded to my requests for assistance with this problem.
EBone,
I had responded to your posting of "too many slingbox failings to be a coincidence" on the slingmedia forum. That post has since been deleted by slingmedia, surprise surprise. I just finished sending the following to Tech News Today (sponsored by sling box), Gizmodo, Engadget, and Techcruch. I suggest you continue to share your experiences with as many people as possible.
"Was a very proud owner of a wonderfully functioning slingbox solo up until a few weeks ago, when it failed inexplicably. I got a few helpful responses from fellow sling users on issues with power adapter and capacitor failures, but those are now wiped from the forums.
It appears that sling media has now taken to deleting all helpful links to outside sites and posts on their slingbox solo help forum and replacing them with a generic response asking the user to perform routine unplugging/reseting troubleshooting techniques that have been exhaustively documented as unsuccessful on the forums. Not surprisingly, this "help article" directs the customer to call slingmedia for a $30 help session if their problem persists after working through the rather shitty troubleshooting steps. No mention is made anywhere of the rapidly growing issue of failed capacitors found in the Slingbox Solo line.
The number of people recounting resurrecting their slingboxes after replacing the capacitors is growing pretty rapidly, and disgustingly, slingmedia seems content to remove any and all mention of this fix on their site, deciding rather that directing their customers to purchase a $30 phone help session is the appropriate way to handle this issue that could never in a million years be properly diagnosed through a phone call.
Oh and if you send them the out of warranty (90 days) slingbox and they determine it is a hardware failing, you are provided with the option to receive a replacement slingbox for $99, when of course, the proper replacement capacitors/soldering kit costs less than 10 bucks at radio shack. Really unfortunate behavior from a company that makes such an innovative product.
Click on any of the links about a dead slingbox and read the newly minted generic response:

The previously provided links that have been inexplicably deleted from the forums, lest the customers find out that an easy $10 fix is a viable alternative to sling media's $99 fix:

placeshiftingenthusiasts.com /slingbox -so...
Any help investigating this questionable behavior by slingmedia would be greatly appreciated."
