Maybe it's just me, but I'm not feeling the new nano.

I'm not sure that the size of the last gen was an issue for most people, and given a choice they'd prefer having tactile controls rather than a touchscreen. I could be totally wrong, but they should have just made this device a new category of iPod (and called it the touch mini or whatever) and just kept evolving the previous nano form factor (i.e. made it a bit smaller with a higher res screen, etc).

I liked how Steve didn't even recognize that the 3rd gen nano existed.

Yeah I thought it was funny how he listed each one with it's redeeming features, then just said "and the third generation..." then skipped to the next one. I wanted to yell out "the fatty!" during that pause. LOL

It's funny because this one reminds me of the 3rd gen.

Your not alone, I think that iOS has jumped the shark with this device. Unfortuately it will sell millions and next year they will relese one with a retenal display amd app support.. Personaly I hope it flops enough for the a real iPod to be back next year.

I'm not particularly hating on it - it's a little like a shrunken D2, but I have to raise issue with how small it is vs how easy it'll be to use one-handed, since a Nano has always been a true 'on the go' player. And I'm not convinced that a player you'll be stuffing in pockets, etc of thin active gear will not react to inadvertent human flesh contact.

During our hands on demo after the keynote, it was kind of weird seeing a touchscreen in what is basically an iPod shuffle form factor. Personally, I think they should have just replaced the shuffle with this and made the nano a 2.8" touch screen device. Seems like that would have been more compelling!

The current iPod shuffle is basically the shuffle from two years ago, but with voice support. Weeee.

Anyway, it will be interesting to see what they do with the nano. I think it's going to sell really well, but it's just a little too small for my tastes.

Fully agree with you. They bring back the old shuffle and announce this as an improvement.

This Nano feels like an upgrade from the Shuffle but selling them both at the same time just seems strange (competing products IMO).

I haven't seen anybody mention this but didn't the new nano drop video support? I don't see anything in the specs. It's like a shuffle with a screen.

Mentioned and agreed. I really don't mind the size and the clip on this one, but I really want the buttons (I often control my nano in my front pocket while wearing a bike jacket. Impossible with touchscreen), and I want the ability to play video occasionally. Maybe I'll go get a 5G finally.

I am sure Apple avoided doing so just to keep the product line simple, as they often work a little too hard at doing. One possible way around the lack of tactile controls though could be a set of headphones with physical controls on the cord. Obviously people want to have more selection of headphones and if this isn't running iOS, as is rumored, a standard iPhone unit probably wouldn't suffice.

I think this is a clear case of pushing more customers to buy the Touch. I think there's still a market for this new Nano, but it's not necessarily the same market as the old Nano. Apple wants most of those users to upgrade to the Touch. I seem to think many of them will.

I've bought each generation of the Nano and I'll be getting this one too. I think it looks very cool.

Totally agree with you on this, but I wonder if I'm in the minority. For me, physical buttons on a music device are a necessity, but I think a lot of people are used to the touchscreen paradigm now. It drives me crazy, but things like the ability to skip tracks without looking at the device don't seem to matter to people.

Maybe I'm wrong though, and people just 'put up with' touchscreens because the hardware is so gorgeous? The form factor of the new Nano is very slick, despite its lack of tactile feedback, and I'm sure there will be ways Apple will try to leverage that screen in future iterations.

Looks way too small to be comfortably usable to me

Same with me - it looks to small, photos will look weird because of the square screen, it doesn't record video anymore (or even play video for that matter, which sucks), and it's too small. It would've been better if they'd introduced one with a bigger, 3:2 screen (like the iPhone) and a touch screen. They could've made it the same form factor as the previous nano and at least put an accelerometer into it- it doesn't auto-rotate anymore! It's certainly the weirdest nano (along with the 3rd gen).

I need a new nano but it looks like I'm going to have to get the current model while I still can, this was a big step backwards.

I like Woz's idea of using the nano as a watch, no? might be a little geeky, but is there a cooler $159 watch out there?

I would have thought it was a good idea if it wasn't obvious that since it's an iPod, everyone and their dog would be doing it the moment it's released (and a picture of the first guy to put it on their dog will inevitably turn up on engadget and other Appledrooling blogs).

I was hoping for the iRiver S10 Bluetooth wristband to come out about three years ago, but it seems it never got beyond a prototype (like most things iRiver in the last 5 years)
